Extracting/isolating part of an image

Good morning

Please could you assist me with a question.

I have attached a black and white JPEG image of Minnie Mouse.
I would like to know how to extract Minnie's bow only from the image and add a mandala/zentangle pattern to the bow.
Thereafter, I would need to put the mandala bow back on the Minnie picture.
Is this possible?

I hope my explanation makes sense.

I would appreciate any help possible.

I´d don´t touch copyrighted stuff.
But simply draw a fresh bow over it: one outline on the outer edges and 3 white parts for the inner portions combined to a "compound path" or grouped when a solid fill color is needed.

I'd just use the bucket tool to fill the area in the bow with an object (or rather, three of them). Then I would combine the three into one object (Path > Combine). After that, I'd add a small black border to the new object, so there is no gap towards the original black border. Then I would add the pattern fill to the object. I would perhaps also change the order of the stroke and the fill in the 3rd tab of the Fill and stroke dialog, to get the largest possible area of 'bow contents'.

Tbh., though, I'd probably not do anything of this, because, as Polygon says, this is copyrighted.

This won´t work on lousy compressed raster images - unfortunately.

@Polygon - can you explain why? You mean the resolution isn't large enough, maybe?

Works fine for me (with a bit of gaps closing, threshold adjustment and modification of stroke width).

Yeah - I took the bucket fill tool with its default settings in first place. What works quite well is to use an increased threshold+ fill Boolean-added to one object as the contour and a second fill at 0,00:

I would just draw right on top of the JPG. Why go to the trouble to "extract" the bow if you're just going to put it back later. Just draw right on top!

Not unless by "pattern" you mean the Inkscape feature called "pattern". To use that Inkscape feature, you would need to do something like what Polygon and Moini suggest. But the way I read your message, I'm not sure if that's what you mean. As far as I understand "zentangle" is black line drawing on white, which isn't necessarily an Inkscape pattern. (I suspect that Disney's copyright has expired on Minnie. Although I'm certainly no expert on copyright. Just to be safe, I would either research it, or I would not use it commercially, only personally.)

Curious how Sonny Bono got involved with copyrights, but I seem to recall he was involved in politics, in the later years of his life.
