Hi I am having an issue where when I drag and drop an image into inscape, the image is reduced in size.
For example, I drag and drop a background PNG, size of 656 width and 398 height, it becomes 590.400 width, and 358.200 height.
I've looked in Preferences -> Bitmap tab, and messed with some values/settings there and nothing changed, as i still get the same issue (i've reset the settings to default)

Which Inkscape version do you use? I cannot observe this in Inkscape 0.92 Win7/64.
Win7/64, Inkscape 0.92.2

Hi faultekaiser,
please make sure that the Import resolution (in the import dialog) is the same as the resolution the program you used when generating the picture.
The number of pixels in the imported image does not change when you import it into Inkscape, so just resizing it with the selection tool after importing /should/ give you the same result, as far as I understand.
Look into the status line to see the imported image's pixel dimensions.

Re: Drag and Drop image into Inkscape becomes smaller size
Thanks, @moini, I also learned again.
I looked at an example raster image (e.g. 200x100 pixels PNG from a screenshot). The image viewer IrfanView tells me that an explicit resolution has not been set, although it assumes 72 dpi. For the same image, GIMP tells me a resolution of 72 dpi. So, this would correspond to a image size of 70.56x35.28 mm.
Such an image (without explicit resolution information?!) will be imported into Inkscape 0.92 with the default resolution of 96 dpi (or 90 dpi with Inkscape 0.91 and earlier). The display size in pixels will be kept the same as indicated by the image size, however, the size in millimeters will be adapted accordingly, resulting in an image with a size of 52.91x26.458 mm.
However, if I explicitely set the resolution for the 200x100 pixels PNG, e.g. with IrfanView to let's say 200 dpi (which gives a size of 25.4x1.27 mm), the image will be imported into Inkscape nevertheless with 96 dpi but this time the size in millimeters will be kept the same. Therefore, the displayed size in px will be modified accordingly to 96x48 px, but the number of pixels of the image will stay 200x100.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Mmh. I don't think the part "the image will be imported into Inkscape nevertheless with 96 dpi" can be correct.
There's an option in the import dialog where you can choose to take the resolution from the file's metadata (or not). Could it be that this option was activated? That would explain how it works when you have set it explicitly, and doesn't if it's not set in the file.

Re: Drag and Drop image into Inkscape becomes smaller size
Thanks for the replies.
I've fixed my issue by reading what moini has said and also some testing with settings, here is what I changed to get proper resolution / size:
1) Import Dialog
a) Image Import Type = Embed
b) Image DPI = Default Import Resolution
c) Image Render Mode = None
2) I went into Edit tab -> Preferences -> Bitmap tab
a) Under "Import" section I changed "Default Import Resolution" from 100 to 90
Now when I drag and drop images into Inkscape, they are proper / original size.
