Wing Gundam
Wing Gundam
Worked on this all night yesterday and all day today. I used to love Gundam when I was a kid. Full view at http://famine-star.deviantart.com/art/Wing-Gundam-278423473. All done in Inkscape except the Gaussian blur for depth of field was done in GIMP.
Re: Wing Gundam
That is Very well done!
I'm not familiar with the character, but the drawing looks very 3 dimensional.

Thank you for the compliments, Inkspots!
Re: Wing Gundam
Amazing work!
I`m even more impressed since you left shades visible.

Re: Wing Gundam
Wow, hard not to imagine you did this in Blender. The depth and shadow are amazing and the blurr adds to the effect so well. I feel like I learned something looking at this also.

snel, it would be fun to hear what you learned doing this artwork - or what ever you wish to share. You really "hit it" in a number of ways.

Hmmm. I'm not sure I learned much from this piece in particular. Maybe I'll do a tutorial soon. But here are some things:
CMYK picker is good for shadows, highlights, and gradients. It's easy to adjust the 'K' slider to get darker or lighter shades of the same color.
For realism pieces, the more vectors you add the better it looks.
If Inkscape is bogged down by lots of filters, toggle view modes to "no-filter" to help speed Inkscape up.

Re: Wing Gundam
You know there are artists lurking around here that just love to hear this kind of thing.
I like your art,
...And I am not lurking.
Ok, anyone lurking out there? Let these artists know, they are putting it out there - come join us.

Another things that helps increase my workflow is panning the canvas with ctrl-right-click-drag instead of using the scrollbars. I just watched a youtube video of somebody using the scrollbars to navigate Inkscape and it looked pretty painful.
Also, the hotkeys are awesome. I use 's' for selection, 'b' for bezier, 'g' for gradient, and 'd' for dropper all the time. My left hand never leaves the keyboard.

Nice hints and tips! I was trying to recreate someone elses logo (from JPG to SVG) to add to a contest entry. Although I had no known filters, I thought of your suggestions and turned off filters and it sped things up.

Nice one. I'll try that.
I use the scroll wheel to pan up and down, [shift]-scroll wheel to pan left right, and [ctrl]-scroll wheel to zoom in and out. I use a wacom tablet mostly nowadays though. The back button lets you drag the picture around like your [ctrl]-right clik drag. I have to use + and - to zoom when using the tablet. You are right: learning shortcuts make a massive difference to the speed of work. (I use P, B, N and S a lot too)
Re: Wing Gundam
^ third button on the mouse (wheel) can be also used for panning. It also works on my pen, as a middle button function.
