Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Hi.
I've always used this site - skydrive.live.comto download nightly builds from.
Now suddenly it tells me I have to create an account in order to download
Is there no alternative way to get it?

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Hi Grobe, it seems we need to find another source - it's a pity because this compiler was nice enough to add in all the in progress live path extensions. will you post here if you find another source of development buids compiled for Windows?
In addition, does anyone know who to contact about the 'nightly build for windows' link on the inkscape downloads page being quite old and out of date?

What exactly is "outdated"?
Uwe Schöler did and still does all the development shapshot builds for Windows, uploads them and hosts the older ones on his personal site (on his costs), the newer ones on skydrive.com (free usage AFAIK). If you follow the download link on his site (OSS-Marketplace) for the top-most latest version ("aktuellste Version"), you'll get forwarded automatically to the skydrive page. I don't really see anything "quite old and out of date" on inkscape.org with regard to this (but yes, I'm aware that the Inkscape project needs a better long-term solution for hosting development builds, not only for Windows).
ISTM that Microsoft has changed the rules for SkyDrive (requiring a 'Windows Live ID' now) :/
You can contact Uwe e.g. via his launchpad account (you need to be logged in), or via his Google+ page, or send him a tweet. Do you know a better alternative where he could host those development snapshot builds for free, without users requiring yet another subscription?

The OSS-Marketplacehttp://www.oss-marketplace.com/index.php/downloads-mainmenu-63/Inkscape/Entwicklerversionen/ page that the link from Inkscape.org has a version from Jan 19 2012 as its most recent build. i was not aware that Uwe Scholler was the generous individual on both sites. The skydrive site had, when i last was able to get in, arabic letters for a username, who knows why, and the OSS site, as far as I can determine, does not link to the skydrive site. The links 'Inkscape - Aktuelle Entwicklerversion' and 'Inkscape - Aktuelle Entwicklerversion R10800' only take you to another page on the same site. I intended no insult or offense, and I truly appreciate the efforts of all the people who volunteer their time and expertise to Inkscape.
Your mind is what you think it is.

I don't know about this particular situation, but a hotmail account suffices as Windows Live ID, in some places. Actually I think it does everywhere, but at least it does for *.microsoft.com.

It does indeed, and i have a Windows live account - but it seems that whatever change has taken place - and it might possibly be related to the Microsoft/NBC split - the builds on the account in question have either been removed or made private.

Odd - it works for me (not that I need Windows builds myself though ;) ):
From inkscape.org/download/?lang=en:
I follow the link to this page www.oss-marketplace.com/index.php/downloads-mainmenu-63/Inkscape/Entwicklerversionen and click on Download for "aktuellste Version" (as mentioned earlier) - which is the top-most one (not R10800 below!):
which then (with two page forwarding hops AFAICT) finally opens the SkyDrive site (and lately then returns to the generic login page at live.com (by Microsoft (?)).
Maybe your browser works differently than mine (Firefox) - else I have no idea why that doesn't work for you.
(When Uwe started with using SkyDrive, I initially asked him to make the external link (or page forwarding) more obvious, especially for foreign-speaking users not familiar with German, but apparently his CMS doesn't really allow to change that entry easily… (besides mentioning at that time already that I didn't think it a good idea to start putting those builds on various external sites, not directly affiliated with inkscape.org (e.g with 'inkscape' as subdomain)).
After the loss of hosting at inkscape.modevia.com, the issue was briefly discussed on the developer's mailing list, without agreeing on a better solution for win32 and osx devel builds (linux nightlies are hosted at launchpad.net as PPAs) - the only alternative site that was proposed is not intended to host such daily or weekly builds and archive them all (as was done on the old hosting site, and is a basic requirement for any new site as well).
Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Oh geez, druban, when you mentioned the MS/NBC split, I hadn't heard about, and thought "whoa, how did I miss that?". But I just now saw it on this morning's news! You must be on the east coast, lol.

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Uwe has fixed the site, downloads for Windows development builds now work again (without requiring an ID) as before.
Follow the links as described in my earlier comment, or use this short link: http://sdrv.ms/Q2Ls0i
@Uwe - many thanks!!!!!

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Yes! It's working now, exactly the way you describe it, ~suv! Thanks for your attention and help as always, and thanks too to Uwe Schöler for his time and effort in compiling so often just to keep us up to date.

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Hi.
I hate to say this. Now it does asking for a hotmail account again.
Funny enough MS seems to have decidet to not ask for account when downloading the smaller debug files
Anyway, thanks for the effort so far

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
I could confirm both (the larger archives with the actual build require to sign in, the smaller archives with the debug files download just fine - tested this afternoon) and did notify UweSch about it.Grobe wrote:I hate to say this. Now it does asking for a hotmail account again.

I'll follow-up here with any news I get about it.
Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
I downloaded the .7z file in the last grey rectangle on the Skydrive page: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=09706d11 ... 3FA52A!217
When I uncompress the .7z file I see three files:
* inkscape.dbg
* inkview.dbg
* gbd.exe
What do I do now to get it to actually run? A few years ago the Inkscape nightly builds were really simple.
P.S. Is there any reason that the download page doesn't link directly to the list of files (URL I included above) instead of forcing you to clicking through a couple pages of German before you get to a page with the file names (and English).

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Just an update after I got help from su_v on IRC. Here's the steps that worked for me.
1. Go to https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=09706d11 ... 3FA52A!217
2. In the top right corner click "Details view" instead of "Thumbnails view" ("Details view" allows you to see the full name of each file!)
3. For each revision number there are two files, download the one with without "-dbg" on the end.
4. It asks you to sign into Live. You may need to create an account if you don't already have one.
Oddly you only need to sign in to download the non-debug version (the file without "-dbg"). You can download the current debug version without signing in.

To whom it might be interesting...
In my case (on Win7/x64/chrome 21.0) I couldn`t download dev-builds in "Details view" but it worked in "Thumbnails view"?!

Re: Don't have MS live.com account - cannot download
Just for info:
the same happens to me:
only can download the small debug archive, but not the complete default archive, neither in "detail view" mode nor in "thumbnail view" without logging in with an Microsoft live id.
Would be great if this can be changed in such a way, that downloading is possible without login.
Anyway, thanks a lot to Uwe for his great support for InkScape!
Tried with both IE and Firefox on Windows 7
Edit as of today (2012-08-30): Now I was able to download it!!!
