I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Inkscape only today. So, I'm pretty sure I have the latest version.
I was glad to see so many formats available under the "Save As" dialogue.
But the one I need the most (WMF), doesn't do the job. It just freezes the application. Even simple shapes like a square or a circle do not export to WMF.The Python window opens and then the application just freezes.
I am using Inkscape in the Win XP (Home) (SP3) environment.
What am I missing? Do I need to download some Runtime environments?
Cannot Export to WMF
Re: Cannot Export to WMF
Welcome to InkscapeForums, BazzaBoy!
Sorry for the delay in responding. I just did a square shape and successfully saved as WMF. I'm on Windows 7 (64-bit). I also saw the python.exe window, and there was a significant pause at that point. But after a couple of moments, it closed, and I had the test.wmf file on my screen.
No regarding the runtime program. If you didn't have it already, the Inkscape installer would have noticed, and prompted (if not automatically) download/install.
Unfortunately, I don't know what to suggest. Maybe double-check that you downloaded the proper setup/installer file, and maybe even download a fresh(er) copy and reinstall (making sure to uninstall first).
Oh, here's one thing you can do before reinstalling. Try saving your file first as SVG. Then Save As WMF. For some reason, sometimes, that has helped others with similar problems. Or you could try File menu > Export Bitmap. This will save a PNG version of your file to the location you choose. You could then open the PNG and try to save as WMF.
Other than that, I'm afraid I don't know what else to suggest. Hopefully others will chime in with some thoughts. But be sure to let us know how these ideas work, and if they solve the problem. We won't give up easily, lol

Re: Cannot Export to WMF
Thanks brynn,
Sorry I did not see the forums till today. I was overseas, then I had surgery.
Anyways, none of the tactics you suggested has worked for me. I created a red square and a blue circle, grouped them, and saved it as an Inkscape svg. Then I saved it as a wmf. Only the red square shows up in the wmf.
Then I saved it as a png. No problems there. I opened the png and then saved it as a wmf. It gave some sort of an error message that I did not understand.
So, my question is, why have Inkscape given the option to save as wmf, when it clearly does not do the job?
I have attached the files for your perusal. For some reason, files with extension wmf will not attach to this forum. So, you'll have to take my word for it.
Any help will be appreciated, as MS Office 2003 does not import svgs.

Re: Cannot Export to WMF
I managed to solve this problem for myself:
I am using inkscape 0.48.1 with windows 7 64 bit ultimate.
I installed uniconverter from http://sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor&op=download
( uniconvertor-1.1.5-win32.msi )
and then copied two files :
C:\Program Files (x86)\sK1 Project\UniConvertor-1.1.5\inkscape-patches\uniconv_output.py
C:\Program Files (x86)\sK1 Project\UniConvertor-1.1.5\inkscape-patches\uniconv-ext.py
to C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\share\extensions
overwriting the existing files.
Save As wmf now works.
Thanks Matt.

Re: Cannot Export to WMF
Welcome Matt!
Well first, I don't know why I nor anyone else saw the last reply here. I'll offer what little I can now though.

I think that's a known bug, but not positive. It sounds like one, anyway.

Was this using Inkscape? Could you please tell us the error message? Would you be able to try converting PNG to WMF with any other program?
Hopefully others can test your file. Unfortunately, I'm a little over my head, and not sure what to look for.
Ok, so Matt, thanks for you comments. Maybe they will help BazzaBoy. And also hopefully inspire others to reply with some explanation as to the hows and whys, etc.
