Hi,
Hopefully I'm posting this in the right section.
The problem I'm having is that the selector tool seems inaccurate.
It's difficult to select something because it does not seem that the hand or the end of the arrow are anywhere near the pixel where any item gets selected. So I have to try many times to select something correctly, but often I get bigger objects that are behind or on another layer, or ones that are close. I've tried to estimate where exactly on screen it is that I have to select something, but it's difficult.
Perhaps I should take a screen capture to illustrate this later on.
I use Inkscape Trunk (although I can safely say the same of the stable release) on Linux Mint 16 Petra x64 (PC) & 32bit (laptop).
Selector issues
Re: Selector issues
Hi.
The selecting may "lag" if you have a detailed drawing, with lots of paths.
The usage of strokes can also make selecting more difficult.
Does this problem still appear with a simple drawing and in outline display mode (Ctrl+5 twice on the numpad)?

Re: Selector issues
Have you tried to estimate with Alt pressed while selecting? That might give you a more accurate visualization.
Re: Selector issues
Though my drawings are somewhat complex, I find hardly any performance issues. I have forgotten also that pressing "alt" does not select underlying objects as it should, but it does work under Windows.
I'll take a screen cap a little later to better illustrate the issue. Thanks for the replies, I appreciate them.

Re: Selector issues
There might be some missunderstanding...
Deselect everything by clicking with the anywhere on the empty part of the screen, inside of Inkscape document. Now....
- Get the cursor near to the items you`d like to select
- press and hold Alt
- draw a line over these items. (red line should apear)
Each of the items / objects which were touched by this red line would be selected when you stop cursor and release Alt. You`ll notice that this red line looks like a freehand drawn line and I thought this could give you a closer estimate on where is the cursor`s scope.
p.s.
There are some shortcuts for zooming, like previous zoom, whole page, 1:1...etc. Check on these too.

Re: Selector issues
Pressing "Alt" actually triggers some Cinnamon window manipulation, so I'll have to modify those settings. So that is why I can't select items underneath - mystery solved. But nevertheless, here is a screen capture of the issue.
You can see in red where the cursor is and the item that is selected. Where I intend to select the white box, it selects the text instead, which is some pixels above. And that's a lot of pixels!

Re: Selector issues
In that case, once the text is selected, hold Alt and click again at the same cursor position, to select the object below.

Trunk has a known regression with a too large hit region for text object, as tracked in

Maybe similar, but unlikely the same (at least with regard to selecting text objects). In general, you can adjust the threshold aka grab sensitivity (in screen pixels) in the preferences (under 'Mouse'), maybe this helps in stable.
