[solved] How to add a knot at a specific place in the line/path?

Postby javierdl » Sat Mar 19, 2016 12:46 am

Hi all!

I need to place a knot right at the intersection I marked.
I know I can add knots in between knots, but in order to get the new knot at that intersection implies affecting the neighbour knots, therefore the shape of the lines :(
I suppose I could create the lines I need manually with the Bezier Curves Tool, but then the challenge would be keeping the resulting lines "nearly perfect and accurate" :(

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

JDL

Hi.
Simply double-click on this specific location with the node-tool.

Actually double-clicking with the Node tool simply adds the new node. It does not place it precisely at the intersection. If "close enough" is ok, then you're good to go. But if you need it precisely at the intersection, it's probably not there.

When I need to place a node precisely at an intersection of paths, here's what I do. Zoom in as far as possible (25,600%). Then double-click as close as possible to the intersection.

Next, enable snapping, and make sure that "Snap nodes to intersection" button is enabled. Now you can drag the node very slightly, and it will snap to the intersection. Note that this WILL change the path slightly. But because you were zoomed in so far, the change will probably not be noticable.

If you need to place a new node at an intersection of paths, and you don't want to change any of the paths AT ALL, it will take much more elaborate steps. It can be done, but it takes some planning.

It has been requested before... no precise method exists without the addition of objects to serve as guides, but a little more precision is possible by using Ctrl-Alt to slide the node tangentially along the path instead of just dragging it (also moves it perpendicularly to the path if you want), but be careful to hold down the modifier keys after starting to slide because this is also the shortcut for deleting a node (by ctrl alt clicking on it).
Your mind is what you think it is.
