Map Projections?

Postby nils » Tue Jan 27, 2009 4:39 am

I like to use Inkscape to draw maps. However, this is quite hard because I can never quite visualize how the maps would "really" look like. So is there a way for me to turn a map from any kind of projection into a view of a globe, or even to transform different type of map projections from one to another? I fully expect that the answer is "no, not without heavy scripting", but maybe someone has done something like this before.

I think if it can it's probably a LPE, not sure if maybe you can use one of the new ones in the dev build. They deform objects in the way you tell them, but mapping to sphere might be out of that scope.

GIMP can open svg files, when you have the map in Inkscape you can open it in GIMP with any resolution you need and then map it to sphere or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if someone had done this in GIMP.

Thanks for your reply, but, uhm. LPE?

Not really comfortable with using dev versions though, lost too much work over the year with betas. So I'll wait. Anyway I found a really good solution (someone else suggested it): Use Google Earth for my maps.
