Ello all. I have a question about features. I hope someone here has illustrator and inkscape and can help a novice like me answer a question. This is about high rez photos.
First question. In illustrator, once you have imported a high fidelity pic, you can go under thr trace tab and select high fidelity photo and it will trace it and turn it to a vector and it looks almost 100% like the original.
This seems impossible in inkscape. How can high rez photos be traced in inkscape without looking cartoony?
Second question, is there a need to convert such large high rez images to vectors? What if i wanted to make a picture to hang on a building? Would i need a vector or raster? Are billboard photos raster or vector?
Thanks

Re: high rez photo trace
Hi.
Large format prints aren't always dealing with regular image resolutions, thus vector format is not a necessity.
You aren't looking at a billboard from the distance you would read a book.
504 cm/238 cm is a regular billboard format.
On an offest printing machine that size would look fine at even @ 30 DPI, CMYK.
That is, 5953 px/ 2811 px.
Digital prints can have larger resolutions, so it all comes down to your needs.

Re: high rez photo trace
Hmm interesting. Ok, so now that question two is answered, how does inkscape compare to illustrator in the arena of high fidelity photos to be traced? I dont know why i want to vectorize a hi fi photo.....
Thanks
Thanks

Re: high rez photo trace
I don't own Illustrator, but the Google-machine tells me AI has a well developed mesh gradient feature, which is still in the oven for Inkscape... I've no idea regarding integration of it with the trace feature.
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: high rez photo trace
Hmm, ok cool. I do like inkscape alot. I have asked a graphic designer friend who uses AI and he asked me why i would need to make a hi rez photo a vector. He says if the photo is high rez, its going to be pretty large in physical size, large enough for 99% of graphic work out there. Haha.
So i guess im beating a dead horse sorta speak. Thanks
