Need your help with Wacom graphic board

Postby DenDem » Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:17 am

Hi!
I don't know if it correct forum to ask, but I'll give it a try.
I consider buying the Wacom Intuos3 graphic board. Do somebody worked with that "gadget" ?
Is it comfortable to work with it with Inkscape?
What is the + and the - of the work with the board instead of mouse?

Thank you very much...

Hi,

I have the Wacom intous3 a6wide tablet and I love it. I use it all the time with Inkscape & the gimp. It takes a little bit of configuration but it's definitely comfortable. If you use windows or a mac it'll be really easy to set up, if you use linux it's a little harder but there are a lot of step by step guides out there and Ubuntu makes it very easy.

In a nutshell, buy it! You won't look back.

Thank you very much for this detailed answer. I have Windows XP so it's not a big deal.
Does Inkscape fully support the Wacom ? Any gliches/bugs?

Thank you again

Note that I haven't hit any show stopping bugs with my Intuous in Inkscape on Vista 64bit--in fact I can't think of any bugs I've hit. Before that I had used it on XP which I believe was also flawless. It's possible there might be problems with support for tilt as it's not a feature I ever use.

I'm pretty sure that of the range of Wacom tablets, the Intuos has the least software problems (when it comes to using them with Open Source/GTK software).

Using a A3 Intuos with serial2USB on XP, works like a charm.

Hey guys, i hope this thread is still being read,

i have a perfectly working wacom intuos 3 a4 special editon, and i dont really use the pen when i want to use it in InkScape.

All my aplications are working correct, and so does my mouse and some option of the pen in InkScape. the only odd thing is, i can't draw a line with the pen, with my wacom mouse i can without changing anything. I tried some other settings, still no luck, and i browsed around a bit. but i have no clue what to do next.

I really hope someone can help me out. cus InkScape is by far the best thing i ever seen for my art.

regards,

Indi

you might try making sure you use the pen before you load inkscape. I had issues in the
past with pens not working right if I hadn't used them before I started inkscape, never worked out why.

I just started using Inkscape (on Windows XP Proff) and I have a Wacom Intuos 3 that I use for 3D CAD work (Pro/Engineer).

The tablet is working is Inkscape but it has some strange behaviours compared to the mouse:

- The tooltips don't show when I use the tablet, only with the mouse
- The tablet pen swithes are assigned to left, middle and right but in Inkscape middle and right are switched

Is there any way of configuring the tablet in Inkscape? I don't see many options in the input device menus.

best regards

Tooltips won't display until the pointer stops moving. I find with a tablet pen that it's impossible to hold your hand steady enough to make a tooltip appear (at least without it disappearing within moments) so if I really want to see a tooltip I have to carefully lift then pen out of range whilst still keeping the pointer in place. Once the pen is out of range the pointer can't move and the tooltip will appear.

The Wacom tablet software will let you map the buttons to different mouse and keyboard strokes for different software.

ahh yes, keeping the cursor absolutely still does the trick with tool tips.

I can't get my pen buttons to map correctly, Inkscape insists mapping the middle button as the right mouse button and the top button as the middle mouse buttonon the pen!

I tried adding Inkscape as an application in the Wacom Tablet Properties and restarted Inkscape but with no changes in the buttons. It's not a very big problem but it takes a little while getting used to.

I don't have time to play with my tablet right now, so remind me if I don't reply within a few days with if I have the same problem or not.

Hey, I wanted to reiterate the problem where the pen button function is reversed. It is a issue one can work around, however it is disturbing that withing Inkscape my pen button functions are opposite what they are in all other programs.

Please, could anyone offer up a solution for this issue?

Have you tried remapping the buttons in the input devices dialog? you can change which button is which channel.

When I go to File -> Input Devices, then select the Keys tab, there are no options available to me. The window is blank.

Is there a step I am missing for button mapping?

I have a Wacom Bamboo. I updated the GTK to make my Wacom function with Inkscape, but since then I've had this button problem.

Ok, so I've found that with my Wacom Intuos 3, the lower button (on the pen) is mapped to right-click whilst the upper button is mapped to middle-click. Remapping this buttons in your Wacom preferences for makes no difference to Inkscape. Like marcus_in_games, I also see no options to remap these keys in Inkscape.

Does anyone know if this might be an oversight?

Hmmm, your right, apologies, thought you could remap the buttons as well as the axes.
