Hi All,
I haven't been able to find a good answer to this problem through many searches and looking at the manual, I may not know the correct wording to explain my problem. I am importing a map from QGIS in .svg format, so that I can edit and move the map elements. However, a larger section of the map is imported (larger than I need) than if I save it as a .pdf.
Problem: I have successfully clipped the map to show only the page size that I want, but when I Save as an .emf file and open it in Windows paint to resize it or bring it into Word, the rectangle that I used to clip the image shows up as a large black rectangle covering the whole page.
So, how can I remove this rectangle? I understand I can't crop in Inkscape, but how can I make the clip more permanent without the black rectangle?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Jon

Hmmm... clip itself shouldn't be a problem... Can you share the file or a similarly problematic file?
Files can be attached to posts, or a link to dropbox works too.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

I tried the same thing you did and I don't get a black rectangle in MSWord or Paint but the .EMF graphics is simply not clipped.
Why can't you crop in MSWord?
Oh, in my opinion, MSWord and vector graphics is really not a good combination (talking about MSWord 2013). MSWord claims to be able to import .WMF, .EMF and .EPS as vector formats but in reality I never got it to work properly with either format.
I assume you want/need to stick to MSWord?
Otherwise, I would recommend to switch to LibreOffice Writer, there you can import SVG directly.

Re: Clipping leaves a black rectangle in .emf file
I'm not sure about this, and I can't see EMF images on Windows, for some reason, so I can't test. Maybe I would need to install something else, to be able to see it. Anyway, I can't test it.
But what I'm thinking is, there's a chance that the page border would act like clipping. In certain situations, such as some image hosts, when you upload the file, the only part of the image that you can see, is what's inside the page border. Or if you were making a webpage, you could make a frame or certan size of space for the image. Then when people view the page, they would only see the part which is inside the page border (even though you could still see the whole thing, when you open in Inkscape).
What I'm wondering, when you save as EMF, would it save the whole thing? Or would it only save what's inside the page border?
In addition to LibreOffice, I would also mention Scribus as an option. It's open source desktop publishing. It little different from word processor, but it's SVG compatible too.

Re: Clipping leaves a black rectangle in .emf file
Thanks for the suggestions, I have come to realize that the black box is a remnant layer from QGIS, not a result of Inkscape, it's just not visible in Inkscape until I save as an .emf.
