Inkscape 0.47
Inkscape » Files » Exporting Files wrote: File types supported:
  • Removed in v0.47:
.ai (Adobe Illustrator). Inkscape v0.46 and earlier supported export to the Adobe Illustrator version 8.0 file format which is a modified form of the EPS level 2 format. This support has been removed since Adobe Illustrator versions 10 (2001) and later can directly import SVG files. This is a better solution as the quality of the AI export was poor.

Inkscape 0.46
Inkscape » Files » Exporting Files wrote: File types supported:
.ai (Adobe Illustrator). Requires ghostscript to be installed. The Adobe Illustrator (version 8.0) file format is a modified version of the EPS level 2 format. Files saved in this format can be displayed in many PostScript viewers (you may have to change the “.ai” file tag to “.ps”). Bitmaps are not exported and transparency is lost.
Tip: Recent versions of Illustrator can import SVG files directly. This will most likely give better results than exporting to an .ai file from Inkscape.

There is one option that determines if the text is converted to a path or is left as a PostScript text object. There is no guarantee with the latter choice that the printing will be done with the correct font if fonts are not embedded in the file.

TOk i see the reason, and i know adobe illustrator supports SVG. And thats what i told them. but some reason when they download it on a windows pc it renames it to a txt. Yes its just a simple rename back to svg but hey these are clients. They want it simple and as an AI otherwise hehe i wouldn't be asking for it hehe. I know this isn't the place but I found out that Xara can export to AI, but having trouble with opening svg files in it. anyways I am gonna try this route.

I have installed .47 but I didn't got save as AI
Then I installed Ghostscript and Remove Inkscape .47 and reinstalled .46
Even Now I am not getting Save as AI option

and I have installed Python 25 as well as Python 26
I have installed uniconver and its all supporting files, It does the work, but little wared, some SVG files it converts and some does not.

As it was mentioned in the above linked forum
If you do not have the option to save or open a particular filetype in Inkscape, check the extension-errors.log file (~/.inkscape/extension-errors.log for Linux or %userprofile%\Application Data\Inkscape\extension-errors.log for Windows) for details about what dependency was not met for the filetype

I have searched in the Inkscape installation directory there is no extension-error.log file available.

Please help me. I want to save as AI[8] thrugh inkscape?

This log file is not in the Inkscape installation directory but in
microUgly wrote:%userprofile%\Application Data\Inkscape\extension-errors.log
or trying to be more verbose (caveat - I'm not using Windows myself):

  • Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Inkscape\
  • Windows Vista - C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape\
where [USERNAME] needs to be replaced with your user name.
