Tips and tricks for abstract arts?

Postby Itqan Ullah » Mon Jun 18, 2012 4:46 pm

Hello :),
I am completely new to inkscape and I am looking forward to learn to make flora patterns and some abstract art. Something like these for example:

I am learning some basics and spiropaths seem something I'll need, so will play around with that bit later. Additionally can anybody give me some tips and trick, links to tutorials etc, that are related to this specific subject (or style) and give me some hints like which tools I should focus on more?

Thank you.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

For those kind of flourishes, the swirly, sort of floral stuff, that can be done with either Pen or Pencil in spiro spline mode. It's really fun to do! Check out the manual, and look up "spiro splines". It also can be called Pattern Along Path (although I don't understand the dual terminology). I learned a lot about it from this nice tutorial: http://verysimpledesigns.com/vectors/in ... wirls.html And I think you'll find many of the techniques that you want to learn for the 2nd screenshot, in various tutorials on this page: http://verysimpledesigns.com/vectors/

I love abstract art, and wish I had better skills for creating it myself. The Spirograph extension is great!! I've spent many, many hours playing with it, and have created literally hundreds of spirograms! Here's a sampler that I made: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1872

You'll also find the Star tool intriguing too, I suspect. Start learning about the Star tool in Help menu > Tutorials > Shapes. And also in the manual (Help menu > Inkscape manual). I've also made hundreds of "star/polygons"! I like to draw mandalas, and the star tool is great for that -- I'm not sure which is most fun, Star or Spirograph. Probably the Star tool, because the Spirograph extension is prone to crashing. When making spirograms, remember to save often :D

Now, if you like really, really abstract art, there's a bug with spiro splines, where if you drag the nodes in a certain way, the path freaks out and goes berserk -- really just elaborate scribbles can be created. Then like a child naming shapes they see in the clouds, I see silly things in the scribbles, then I use Inkscape to add color and emphasize the shape, so that everyone can see it. When I first discovered it, I thought it was an intended feature, because I was having so much fun with it. But I've recently learned that it's a bug, and eventually will be "fixed". That will be too bad :D

Anyway, there are a few techniqiues for you to strat practicing with. And you may soon find others on your own :D
