Elipse controls disabled

Postby rmmarsh » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:14 am

When I select the Elipse tool, there are 3 icons that appear (one looks like Pac-man, the other a half moon, and the third a full moon). For the life of me, I can't figure out how to enable them so I can pick the "full moon" one.

Ideas?

Hi rmmarsh,

It is actually quite simple - the one you call "full moon" is a reset button and only enabled if your ellipse or circle is not full. If you used the other options then you have an arc (circle segment) which can be closed (pac man), or open (half moon). To reset the circle to a full one, you click the "full moon" button.

You can read more on how to draw circles and use of these functions here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... -Arcs.html

I have the book... that's where this all started! Trying to do Bah's "Bank Note" and was wondering why they were disabled.

One more question please... sometimes I can bold a font, sometimes I can't, even when it's the same font (Ariel) but a different point size. Any ideas on why? (again, trying to do the Bank Note example)

Thanks for the response...

Sometimes a font does not have a definition for Bold and then you cannot set the font to Bold. If you click on the Text Dialog (the T pictogram at the top of the screen) you can easily see if a font allows Bold or not. If you edit text through this dialog, you need to click apply to see it in effect.

When I indeed try to edit a font directly on the canvas by clicking the icons, it shows some inconsistent behaviour (on windows) - while using the keyboard (Ctrl+B) with the text selected works fine. I'll check the bug list at launchpad to see what is know about this and let you know (or perhaps others know more about this).

---
edit: there are quite a few bugs related to fonts, font variants (including font weight support) listed. Some of them are marked critical and unfortunately some seem to be around a long time or reappear in several versions of Inkscape. The none responding of the buttons is mentioned within these bug reports. Check the lists yourself by going to : https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape (and search for "font weight")
