[solved] A bug gets status "Triaget", what does that mean

Postby Grobe » Fri Feb 22, 2013 1:47 am

Hi all.

I've being posted some bug reports during the time since I did felt in love with Inkscape.

One little thing I haven't thaught of is the meaning of what it actually means when a bug gets the status "Triaged". Why I wonder, yes it is bebause that neither Google translate nor Wikipedia can get a propriate answer of the meaining of the word itself.

An answer on this should be helpful for any non-english members.

Hi.

From what I can find on the net I reckon the meaning of triage in this context; "sorted by importance".
See no 3; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/triaged
See no 2;http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/triage

As I am not a developer I'am just guessing here but I reckon the most important bugs will be looked at - and fixed - first.
( Opposed to a "first come - first serve" scheme. )

Where are you seeing the term triaged? AFAICS the Inkscape developers use 'Heat' and 'Importance' both of which would come from the same decision process...

More wonderful and thorough info follows from :drumroll: ~suv :D

Quoting the Help pages at launchpad.net (after all, the bug tracker software is developed, maintained and hosted at launchpad.net - the Inkscape project is "just" a "customer" of the service(s) launchpad.net offers for software projects, and is not involved in any way in how the bug tracker is coded, what technical terms it uses in the web interface, or what options for bug tracking it offers in general):
Bug statuses in Launchpad
(…)
Available to everyone
  • New
  • Incomplete: the bug report is incomplete and needs more information before it can be triaged. Bugs in this state are considered for expiry.
  • Invalid: the report describes the software's normal behaviour, or is unsuitable for any other reason.
  • Confirmed: a member of the community other than the original reporter believes that this report describes a genuine bug in enough detail that a developer could start work on a fix.
  • In Progress: a developer has taken responsibility to fix the bug and has begun work.
  • Fix Committed: a developer has committed his/her fix to the project's codebase.
  • Fix Released: a new version of the software, featuring the bug fix, has been released.
  • Opinion (Under consideration for removal) : there is a difference of opinion about the bug and everyone is free to continue the discussion, however, the project maintainers consider the issue closed.
Only available to the bug supervisor
  • Triaged: the bug supervisor considers that the bug report contains all information a developer needs to start work on a fix.
  • Won't Fix: this is acknowledged as a genuine bug but the project has no plans to fix it.

… and the Inkscape wiki page describing the bug management guidelines (also used by members of Inkscape's bug team for bug triage):
Bug status
Launchpad has several bug statuses. Their use in Inkscape is explained here.
  • New: this bug was just reported, and it is not known whether it is reproducible. Try to reproduce this bug on your computer.
  • Confirmed: this bug was reproduced and verified to be Inkscape's fault. You can work on tracking it down and fixing it.
  • Triaged: a Bug Team member has verified the bug and assigned an importance to it. Inkscape developers accept that they will work to resolve the bug.
  • In Progress: someone is working right now to fix the bug. Do not use this status to indicate that you are willing to work on a given bug, or that you will work on it some time in the future; only set it if you have actually started to work on a fix.
  • Fix Committed: the bug is fixed in the development version (lp:inkscape branch). If you have committed a fix, but are not sure whether it works, for example if the issue only happens on a platform you don't have access to, leave as "In Progress".
  • Fix Released: the bug is fixed in the latest stable release of Inkscape. Also use this status for bugs that only appeared in the development version, and were never encountered in a stable release.
  • Incomplete: not enough information was provided by the bug reporter to adequately identify or reproduce the issue. If nobody else encounters a similar problem, it will be marked invalid after some time.
  • Invalid: this problem is not Inkscape's fault, or the reporter did not reply to requests for more information.
  • Won't Fix: issue that will never be fixed in Inkscape due to design choices or because it is out of the scope of the program. An example might be a request for editing audio clips or rewriting Inkscape in a different language.

In general, having one's own report set to 'Triaged' is a good sign (it's one step further than just 'Confirmed') and nothing to be worried about.

Thanks. It never strokes me to look at any help page to the bug tracker, neither is it easy to find a link to the refered page.

I don't understand. Why don't you like the smileys? I don't think anyone meant to be offensive. (Personally I was happy to see ~suv, so I thought a "happy dance" smiley would show my happiness.) And you actually used one yourself, actually 2. So I don't understand why you call it spam??
