appcrash -- too many objects?

Postby AstroStudio » Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:38 pm

I'm running Inkscape on Win7 and I'm working with an svg file containing ~120,000 objects. Every time I export it to bitmap, Inkscape crashes. However, if I remove half of the objects (doesn't matter which half), the export succeeds.

I guess this is the kind of thing one should report to "Launchpad" (would be first time for me). But I thought I'd run it by this forum just in case some of the wise folks on here can give me some feedback. Is what I'm describing a known issue?

Hhhmm....well yes, there are known performance issues in Inkscape. I don't know about this one specifically.

If you're on Windows 7, you probably have plenty of memory?? My only thought before reporting would be to make sure it's Inkscape's performance that's the problem, and not your system. Because Inkscape has crashed on me using my older 1.25 gb (ram) XP machine, when working on large images, that I could not reproduce on my 8gb Windows 7 machine (using the same image). This would imply to me that challenging a system's resources can induce Inkscape to crash.

Although I'm far from expert, lol! I have not had others attempt to confirm though. It's just an observation on my part.

I am running the 64-bit version of Win7 with 12GB of RAM -- so no problem there! But since Inkscape is a 32-bit app, I do not believe that it can allocate more than 2GB.

Bug #168914 in Inkscape: “Too many heap sections”, scroll down to comment #11:
Krzysztof Kosinski on 2010-02-03 wrote:With libgc 7.1 compiled with MinGW and this configure line:

Code: Select all

./configure --enable-large-config --disable-shared --disable-threads --prefix=/c/devlibs-update
the file opens correctly, but trying to export it results in an out of memory error. This is different from 0.47-3, which gives a "Too many heap sections" message box after a few minutes of pondering the file.

and further down in comment #17:
I think this issue might go away when I merge my Cairo rendering branch, because we won't be using libgc for pixblock allocation any more then.

i.e. performance issues like these (affecting all platforms, but not to the same extent: the Windows port seems to be affected most), will hopefully be improved in Inkscape 0.49, once the switch to cairo is done for Inkscape's internal renderer.

I think no one answered you the first time because of the spectacular lack of info you provided. I thought you probably were a spammer! Also because the original message was answered. Did you read it?

Of course, we can't help with your other programs, unless someone just happens to recognize some kind of issue. But for Inkscape, please tell us:

-- your Inkscape version
-- operating system
-- how much RAM on your system
-- how large is the file that's crashing
--what other kinds of programs are now crashing

Also, it would be ideal if you could share an SVG file with us, that's been crashing.

OMG, did you do everything on that page you referenced? Yikes! Some of those things should not be done by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. And no offense, but the author's grammar alone would cause me not to follow the advice (because it's an indicator they might not be sincere, or might not even know what they're doing).

Do you have anti-virus installed? Is your system now clean?

It's not likely that the reason Inkscape might crash is related to the reason your other programs are crashing. For the info we have at the moment, I would suspect you have something like a virus on your system. But if you can give us a file that crashes, we can investigate that file.

One last thing. If you put Inkscape into a Compatibility Mode, please put it back in regular mode. If you put a bunch of other programs in Compatibility Mode, that might be why they are now crashing.
