Color Management Problem

Postby Caesar » Sun Jun 12, 2011 1:08 am

Hi all!
I am working on a project in which I need CMYK colors, so I started searching for CMYK in Inkscape, and I came to downloading some color profiles, and adding them to /home/user/.local/share/color/icc .
And I did a config like the snapshot attached, but colors are tooooo fake, and when I mark "Mark out out of gamut colors", it marks EVERY color as out of gamut.

The same config in GIMP works fine(with a plug-in so GIMP doesn't change out-of-gamut colors).

Why is that?!Is there any problem with the config, or it's a bug, or what?!
Thanks,
Caesar

P.S.: I can recognize if CMYK colors are fake, but as I am new to AdobeRGB, I am afraid it shows AdobeRGB colors fake too.

While I'm not sure what a "color profile" is, I do know that Inkscape does not support the CMYK color printing model. You can use the CMYK tab in the Fill and Stroke dialog, to color an object, but it's not the same thing as the CMYK printing.

I'm not familiar with the Color Management dialog that you show in your screenshot (can't even find it in either 0.48 or 0.48.1, so perhaps you're using the development version). But others may be able to provide more info or background about it, for you.

Every software capable of doing color management is able to show every color space (for example, CMYK) if it has it's ICC or ICM profile, and Inkscape has color management since (I think) 0.46; The problem is that I don't know why it's colors are totally fake when I do print simulation!
And the window in the screenshots is in File>Inkscape Preferences>Color Management.

Oh ok, I found it. So being in Inkscape preferences, it adjusts the color for every image that you make (until you change the settings again in Inks Prefs). I thought you were referring so something individual per image.

You said at first that you need CMYK color, so I was assuming that the reason they appeared "fake" was because Inkscape doesn't support the CMYK print model. But when you downloaded the color profiles, you would have to have gotten RBG profiles, right?

And it's the RGB profile that appears fake? Or have I dived in over my head, lol?

You know, it must show the CMYK colors true(as printed) too, as it uses it's color profile; my sRGB is shown true, so AdobeRGB must be too, so Print Simulation must be wrong.
I'm just confused. :(

Yeah, I think it's time for me to wave the white flag, and ask someone else who knows about these things to help you. I appreciate your patience with me, just trying my best. But that's how we learn, right?

Anyway, anyone who can sort this out, please feel free to jump right in :D

Well, still waiting for someone in the know about this....

Meanwhile, I just remembered a couple of things. One is that Color Management is not fully supported yet. Don't ask me why, I don't understand myself, but sometimes the developers put coding into the software for features which don't really work yet. So that may well be the case here.

The 2nd thing, is that someone has written an extension that will allow for printing in CMYK, if I understand correctly. Here's a link to that topic (including download link): viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5943. Maybe it will work for you, or at least give you some ideas??

I think I must ask about it on Developers Mailing List.
I'll check for that plugin.
Thanks again.

Ok, one more reply.

I just read this about the Color Management dialog in another topic:
~suv wrote:AFAIU those settings do not affect output (or printing) - they configure the color-managed view option (menu 'View > Color-managed View') to simulate different output/device color profiles on-canvas and do not modify the color values stored in the SVG file.

So that should give you a lot to go on!

All best :D
