choosing a tablet (newbie)
choosing a tablet (newbie)
Hi there, I am new to inkscape (and graphics in general). having a lot of fun though. can anyone recommend a tablet that will work with inkscape 0.47 on a mac running Leopard (10.5.8)? As i'm new (and have 2 kids), I would like something really cheap to start with. Once I get better I can always upgrade. Really excited about finding this forum as it looks like a great place to learn. Thanks in advance, and see you around.
Re: choosing a tablet (newbie)
Welcome to InkscapeForum!
I'm sorry no one has answered your questions yet. I think the reason is probably because there are no cheap or knock-off types of tablets. Although I certainly know very little about it. All I know is that the vast majority of people who have posted messages here seem to be using Wacom tablets. I do know that Wacom has several (maybe many) different models, and among them may be a starter model, or maybe a child's tablet or something. But again, I don't really know.
So the best thing I can recommend is visiting the Wacom website. Otherwise you could always google....or maybe even ebay or craigslist? And also, if you do end up with that type of tablet, be sure to search our forums. It seems to be tricky getting a couple of their features to work with Inkscape. (Inkscape is always under development, and it's my understanding....actually I'm not that well-informed....but I believe efforts are underway to bring Inkscape up to full support for tablets.)
But don't let that stop you from learning Inkscape. Many, perhaps most of us work only with a mouse! If you can't afford a tablet right now, you could still start learning the basics, then transition to the tablet later.
Anyway, sorry I can't directly answer your question, but maybe someone else more knowledgeable will reply soon. All best

Re: choosing a tablet (newbie)
You might consider looking on e-bay for a nice Wacom for a low cost. I'm using one that is ten years old or more, it works great. Perhaps, if you have some graphic arts companies / advertisers near by, you could call them and see if they have an old one laying in a closet. You will be surprised at how helpful folks can be.
