Brush tool
Brush tool
I want to know if there is a brush tool in Inkscape because I cannot find it even consulting some tutorials. Suppose, I have a face sketch, I want to paint it, how to do? I saw three painting videos, I want to know how to get the brush to make like them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YQgCZ6rgzs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjpK6Q6pV9s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbFLQuPqgNc
However, I clicked on the "Calligraphic" pen which I saw it is a brush stroke, but when painting, it is adding white color when you paint on it again. Look the screenshot attached for that. On the first video link, when the guy is painting on the color again, it is not generating any white color. Moreover, I want to know how the guy made the circle on the second video link and also how the guy is painting the face on the third video link.
Thank

Re: Brush tool
Hi ali2013,
There is not a brush tool in Inkscape. The closest thing to a brush is using Pattern Along Path (either extension or or path effect). That's because Inkscape is vector graphics, and the tools which we usually think of as brushes are tools for raster graphics. There are some excellent topics about creating "brushes" with Inkscape, if you will search the forum. I'm sorry that I don't have the links saved. But I know they are there
Edit
PS -- The tool that is used in your first tutorial is the Calligraphic tool, and to my understanding, does not act like a brush (although I realize the tutorial author is calling it a "brush tutorial")(which is rather irresponsible in my opinion). So if you are looking for what we typically think of as a brush in rastser graphics, that will not be the best tool to use.
Your 2nd tutorial is using many, many, many Ellipses with transparency, to create a sort of watercolor appearance. That is not what I think of as a brush either. It's not even clear from the video whether inkscape is actually used for this. Although with the extememly sketchy info provided, it seems that Inkscape could do this.
From what I can tell, the 3rd tutorial is also using the Calligraphic tool, along with Paint Bucket tool. That's not really a brush either.
In my opinion, none of those tutorials is appropriate for new Inkscape users. You may find the tutorials in my forum signature to be a little more helpful

Re: Brush tool
There isnt exactly a brush tool for Inkscape right now.
The calligraphy tool creates a path with both a stroke, and a fill, but the path isnt always closed, which is why you get those odd bleeding color areas that can look like white blobs.
( I should confess here, that I dont really understand the calligraphy tool, and seldom use it for that reason)
Try using the pen/path tool instead.
You can create your own shape to use as a brush, and paint with it. Create your shape,..copy it to the clipboard, but leave it on your canvas somewhere out of the way.
To paint with your custom "brush" do the following.
1. click on the pen tool
2 from the pen's toolbar , under shape select clipboard,
Now you can draw with your custom shape and use it as a brush.
You can use the shapes "triangle in", and "triangle out" to create a line that tapers from beginning to end, or from end to beginning.
Just like always, you may need to tweak the shape of you path once you finish drawing it, adjusting curves and so on, but your shape should follow
along these changes as you make them.
Paint brushes in programs like Gimp, Krita, and My Paint are raster images, which is why they can be used the way they are, and also why Inkscape doesnt have them.
Edit: I see brynn also posted an answer to your question, while I was typing.
Another edit: P.s. I looked at the video tutorials, and the people recording them referred to the calligraphy tool as a "brush stroke" tool, which isnt really wrong. It is meant to create a calligraphic...brush type stroke. We just dont call it a brush tool. If your having trouble following the video tutorials, because of the effect in your screenshot, try turning off fill in the stroke you made with the calligraphy tool, and try to avoid crossing one stroke with another.

Re: Brush tool
oh, she's a lady! : ) We had that discussion on another thread a long time ago!
On a side note: I didn't know that there's a FB inkscape page, anyone have the link, and is it connected to this site by any chance?

Re: Brush tool
One of the options for the calligraphy tool is to turn on or off that overlap behaviour. Check out the buttons in the caligraphy pen toolbar.
Re: Brush tool
This is the word I was searching for this 'Overlap'. Can you tell me which buttons because I tried all but in vain.
Re: Brush tool
Thank you, got it like a boss!
Re: Brush tool
Well, after much misunderstanding about my gender, I decided to put a flower for my avatar (maybe 6 months ago, or so). Unforunately, is hasn't stopped all the mix-ups, although it seems to have stopped some of it. Sigh
I don't have a FB account, Twitter either. I'm not a big fan of the whole social network thing. I didn't care who liked who when I was a teenager, and I don't care now. So whatever happens on FB, I don't know anything about it. I've never seen a link to an Inkscape FB account here, but I assume you could go to the main FB page, and do a search. Or there probably is a link at inkscape.org
You must have me mixed up with someone else. I've never made a video tutorial. I have written a handful in text, but they're all on this forum. Maybe you thought I was male because of a male voice on a tutorial that you thought I made?

Oh no, not at all. I didn't mean to give the impression I was angry. Not at all!
(I would edit the message to read better. But I don't know which part gave the misunderstanding. Anyway, no problems, no worries )

Re: Brush tool
By the way, the slow issue when applying effects or when using blur should be corrected. It is annoying. The computer becomes slow on this part.
