Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Hello Everyone,
i am new to Inkscape and vector drawing, just having installed it on my windows box.
looks really promising but i can not get fonts working in it.
the fonts that came with windows are working perfectly. but when i try to use a 3th party font it does not work.
i use suitecase to manage the fonts on my pc.
when i try to use a opentype font, they are not even showing up in the font selector.
truetype fonts are showing up in the selector, but when i select the font it is not applyed and just displayed as a standard font.
any tips how to get the font working in inkscape?

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Hi,
@patlabor
That's interesting, because I have the same problem. In one of my other posts I queried if the fonts folder within Inkscape could handle and read the fonts directly from its folder, the short answer was no. I believe the developers are looking into these folders to make them functional. I still can't figure out why Inkscape won't read these new installed fonts from the main fonts folder.
Help!

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Inkscape picks up fonts form the OS' font dir just fine. There are a few limitations tho. Only TTFs and OTF (TTF flavor) work. Bitmap fonts, Type 1 fonts or the PS flavor of OTF don't work. There are also some issues if the font name contains special chars or spaces. IIRC the spaces thing has been addressed recently.
Type 1 and OTF/PS should work on Linux/Mac, because it doesn't use Pango there.

You might find a little more detail about this in the FAQ.
Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Finally solved!!!
I had the same problem: fonts copied to c:/windows/fonts (I use Windows XP Professional 32-bit) didn't show up in Inkscape 0.46 font selector dialog.
Then I tried to add fonts as described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314960
Namely: Open Explorer (total commander won't work), go to c:/windows/fonts, and FROM THE FILE MENU, SELECT INSTALL NEW FONT!!!
This File menu item shows up only if you select the fonts dir in Explorer...
Select the dir where you have your new fonts, click Select All and that's all. This action made the mighty OS copy the font files to the fonts dir and also update its secret fonts cache or registry or whatever, but then I saw all the new fonts from Inkscape 0.46.
(I also deleted c:/windows/system32/fntcache.dat, but probably it also works without deleting it.)

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Hi!
I have a similar problem, yet not exactly the same.
I've downloaded and installed a TTF font via the %windir%\Fonts procedure, and it does show up in Inkscape properly. In fact, when i select it from within Inkscape, the preview looks perfect.
The problem is that when i "Apply" the font, it just changes it to some arial-like font, rather than my newly installed font.
Any help on this?
Thanks!

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
I've had that issue before. I always blamed it on the font rather than inkscape as it was only with free fonts that I had this problem.
Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
I guess you're right.
I've just tried the same procedure with another font and it worked out fine.
Thanks for your answer, though.

In inkscape 0.46, set the font and font size from the dialog Text and Fonts in the Text menu..
Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Hello,
This does not work for me. I have a font created by my friend. Well it is not really a font but few symbols created as a font because of use the command "fix on path". I really need them.
I can't see them only in Inkscape. Corel Draw, Gimp, Open Office, MS Office see it. Anybody can help? Is there a way to fix this font working? Any sugestions?
Thx,
Buz

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Well, the final solution was to re-generate font from the beginning and after that it works fine.

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Sorry if this is a massive case of necro (and if there's general dissaproval of that) but I've had some problems similar to this but not the same.
I'm honestly not sure if this is just because I'm trying to run this program in win7, but I can't seem to select fonts. When I use the dropdown in the text tool, I can see the preview text fine (but grayed, I don't know if that's normal.) I can select a font but it never applies. Instead, when I start typing, the font reverts to the stock sans font. I've tried applying TTF fonts but the results are the same.
I'm running .46, so according to the FAQ there's no problem. So, I'm perplexed here.

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
Hi, I have similar problem.
I have Neo Tech font family installed in Windoze XP, SP3. They cannot be more installed. They are bought for money from a professional, so they are supposed to be good. They are True Type. I use Inkscape v0.48. I cannot see the fonts, neither in the toolbar, nor in the Text and Font dialog. They appear as they were non-existent for Inkscape, though all other applications can use them, including gimp, corel, office...
Any advice?

Unseeable fonts
I have the same problem but different (just to quote the others )
I'm running 0.46, supposed to have no problems. Font is symbol (true type outlines) and it is installed in the normal Windows directory, where all other applications are able to find it - but Inkscape. 'Re'-installing did not help, it just put another copy of the same file into this directory.

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
try moving the fonts you need installed to the system fonts folder/directory it worked for me when the fonts I installed didn't show up in inkscape.
Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
I know this is a super old post, but this is the first page that pops up when this issue occurs.
So, Inkscape reads the fonts installed from the system font directory and Windows 10 in all of its infinite wisdom does not copy the file to the system directory when you install a font.
Here's what I had to do to get around that:
1) Uninstall the font you were trying to use
2) Open Command Prompt (Win+R, cmd) as an Administrator
3) Use the "cd" command to navigate to where you downloaded the file, e.g. if your file is downloaded in your documents folder on your C: drive, then you type "cd C:\Users\(your username here)\Documents"
4) Use the "copy" command to copy the file from your source folder to your system font directory, e.g. "copy yourFont.ttf C:\Windows\Fonts"
5) In Windows Explorer, navigate to where you downloaded your font and install it
6) Open (or restart) Inkscape
After following these steps, I finally got the font to load up in the menu.

Re: Fonts not working in Inkscape, need help
There are better ways to do this than copying the font file, so you have it twice on your system.
See https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/50
(if you have the option to install for all users or to install as admin on right-click, use that for new fonts)
