Thinning lines created with fill

So first off thanks for this community for providing useful tips as I have dabbled in inkscape.

I am trying progressively more ambitious things and hoping to learn to use the program better. I've never really done design much before but I don't have money to pay designers so I guess I have to learn.

I am working on the above logo, and I want to take the lines and thin them down, and then overlay a gradient over the whole thing. I like the structure of the logo, I just think it looks to bulky and I want to get it to look more sleek and lazer like. The inspiration is this logo:

I am a major major beginner so it is proving challenging. I tried using the tweak tool, and it works for slimming it down, but I can't get it to be uniform. I looked in the properties to try to see if I could find the width of the fill, because I know how to adjust the width of stroke, but I can't find the fill width anywhere.

If I can figure that out I think I can figure out how to group each color on its own and then make each group/object have a gradient to match with the others.

Any advice/suggestions much appreciated!

Not too easy, since the lines are likely fills. Maybe try using insets to create new thinner outlines.

Using tiled clones in a radial patter would allow modifying just 1/8 of the artwork and the rest will update.

I'd consider using a parametric CAD program to easily change scale, width, radius angle , etc.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Whoa, that's a bit over my head. Yes, the lines are fills.

How would I go about using insets?

Path menu > Inset (insets by 2 px per click) or Path menu > Dynamic Offset (lets you drag the inset/outset to wherever you want it).

I would probably try removing the fills, and then edit the paths. I would try setting up a bunch of Guides to help maintain proportions. Since I can't see the SVG file, I don't know if this would work, but I would look into maybe duplicating the paths, and then Object menu > Object to Guides. That creates guides automatically based on the selected paths. Then by double-clicking the guide, a little dialog opens, which among other options, allows relative movement. So you could move guides relative to each other, rather than doing math with the coordinates. And I would definitely use snapping, too. http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... pping.html

Hmm, not quite getting it. At first I tried selecting the object and applying inset and nothing happened. I tried object to path, but still nothing.

Then I tried activating edit paths by nodes, and inset worked, but it came out all lumpy and uneven.

Image might be more complicated that I expected... feel free to PM me and attach/link an example file.
