[solved] Text effects

Postby capnhud » Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:26 pm

Ok guys I am a little stumped on achieving these text effects.

1. How do I make text resemble this 3d effect.
Image

Not the dropshadow but the letterforms of Woodhaven Country Club. So that it is crisp and sharp as in that logo

2. On this blues fest logo

Is this the extrude effect being used twice or is there another way to achieve that effect?

1. It looks like there is a darker copy that is just barely moved left and down, a tiny bit. You don't really see it directly, but it gives a hint of depth. The separate drop shadow reinforces the effect by making your brain think the surface is further below, so that the dark copy isn't a shadow but a shaded side of the letter.

2. Make your text. Convert to path, then duplicate. Extrude one of them. The other floats over the top of the extruded group, slightly offset.

Ok will give those suggestions a go. I kinda thought your suggestions were the way to acheive this but I believe the initial drop shadow is the part that is giving me fits.

Interesting. I have been thinking about my next screencast and I was going to cover this very thing...3D text. Perhaps I'll have something soon.

I think you'll find that effect is actually achieved using something like "Bevel and Emboss" filter effect that is in Illustrator and Photoshop. If you look carefully, as well as having a slight shadow on the right, it has a slight hilight on the left.

I believe you could achieve this exact effect using SVG Filters, but proper support for that isn't coming until Inkscape 0.46. Kelan's method should offer a pretty good substitution until then.

Try effects>modify path>edge 3d.

This gives the desired effect :D only I cannot seem to edit the color because it is unset. What does that mean and how do I correct it because this is the way to acheive the initial letterforms on the first logo. I just need to know how to change the color to what I want. Also what exactly is taking place by using this effect? But man great call Simiralius.

Your screencast solves the problem of the blues fest logo. Easy and simple to follow.
