Hi I am new here and new to Inkscape!
I find it to be truly awesome. I own Coreldraw and have used Illustrator, Xara, Freehand, etc.

I am using mostly open source and / or free software and I feel that Inkscape is the best piece of open source software.
I wish Gimp, Synfig had the nice interface that Inkscape has, but anyhow...

I got this pencil illustration off Google and tried my own (the bottom one), now I am new and wanted to try something simple.
I know it doesn't match exactly and if you zoom in you can see lines don't match perfectly.
I had some trouble with the blending / color matching.
Over all I don't feel it looks that bad for a old newbie like me.

I would like to eventually be able to illustrate my kids and grand kids, but that a ways away

I am not going to improve on this project as it was just to try it out.

Please let me know what you think...

I guess my only other question is how to embed my work right here in the post?
I tried upload attachments, with svg, png and jpg. All it says is not allowed.
You can see from examples below that I am getting no where with trying to embed here in post!

It amazing how people can look, but so far no one can reply!

Um, these days, one will often find that search engine bots log many more visits to a forum like this, than actual people. Don't be offended. In the end, I imagine you would want helpful comments rather than "great" or "cool". Those who take the time to comment do so because they think they have something useful to contribute.



Here I've inserted your image into my message. All you do is:
1 - Copy the URL of your image.
2 - Click the Img button, when you're ready to insert it into your message (in this editor), and paste the URL between the tags.
3 - You can click Preview, if you want to make sure it shows up as you wish, before Submit.

I still can't see it in the forum (for reasons I don't understand at the moment), but did see it at picamatic. Did you follow a tutorial? It looks like one I've seen somewhere. I'm not sure what kind of comments you're looking for. But the only problem I notice is a lack of shading on the eraser. Then again, that may not be important for your potential intended use?

As for your problems uploading, there is a limit to the file size, and I think some limits to the file type. The error message you're getting should tell you why. Other than that, I'm not sure?

I think Inkscape is amazing too, and I also use many opensource programs at home, all of which I'm very pleased with. Inkscape, GIMP and Blender are the ones I use the most, and all 3 have a very helpful community.

Hey Thanks brynn - I understand, but I didn't realize that that info was not correct!

No tutorial - just basic previous experience with the brand name vector programs.
I Google image searched for a easy picture to try out.
I have no idea if there a tute for that pencil.

I still love Coreldraw and will keep on using it, but I also love Inkscape!
There are certain features from Coreldraw and Xara that I would love to see in Inkscape.
Gimp is good and has a lot to offer, but I as many others would love to see a better interface (same with Synfig.)
When opening a picture in Gimp, I would like to see thumbnails. A better pen tool (like Photoshop pen tool) and a better magic wand.

I will post some more work as I go along!

Yes this is from Corel and the closest I've seen to it is the red drum set talked about on here, done in Inkscape.
I've seen some amazing work done by very talented artist, in Adobe, Corel, Freehand, Xara, Gimp, and Inkscape!

add some shiny parts on your eraser, probably in line with the shiny part on the pencil That should make it look a lot better.
I looks like the top pencil has some shading to it, but the bottom one doesn't . I'd shade the bottom one as well.
