It is for one of my school's environmental club t-shirt designs. I believe in the creation on that image (i wasn't the one who did it) an image like this was used to create the effect with text.

I need to recreate this image with a better font and (obviously) in SVG.

You've asked a mouthful, so I'll help you by breaking down the problem...
The final problem is how to colour each letter. You could select each letter and change it's colour manually and it wouldn't be that much work--keeping in mind you can easily select groups of them and set the colour. Or you go back to step C and clone each letter of "LIFE" individually using the trace option (http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... Trace.html) to pull the colour from your globe image--but that may take you longer to figure out how to do it than doing it manually
- Create one peice of text, "LIFE" -> http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text.html
- Convert the text to a path and break apart it apart so you can colour each letter.
- Use clone tiling to create multiple copies of "LIFE" spread evenly in an area -> http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles.html
- Use a clip to clip the text to a circular area -> http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Clip.html

I concur on the trickiness of the Trace option - but it is worth it, and could, with more tightly spaced words, give a nice result.
For selecting the right characters i propose underlying the picture for reference and then "drawing" the selection while in
with Alt pressed.
