Unicode font not working, installed fonts not found

Postby Greyblade » Thu May 26, 2011 9:06 am

I just started using Inkscape on a new system, and so far I've run into two issues that both have to do with fonts. I don't know if they might be related or not.

For a while now, I had been using Inkscape (I think it was 0.48) on a laptop running Ubuntu (I think I was using 10.4). Recently, however, I built a desktop and am running Windows 7 64 bit Professional. So this might be a Windows vs. Linux issue.

The first issue is that a Unicode font I downloaded and installed won't display some special characters. The font I downloaded is Junicode, though I think it's a newer version than what I was using on my laptop. The same special characters that don't display in Inkscape show up just fine in Open Office Writer, and would also display properly in Inkscape on my laptop. In order to get the symbols to display in Inkscape, I had to change the font to either OpenSymbol or Segoe UI Symbol. I don't know that I care for the style of those fonts, however, and would like the option to display the symbols in Junicode if I want to.

The second issue is that some of the fonts that I've downloaded and installed are not being found by Inkscape. I installed all the fonts by right clicking and selecting "Install" from the menu. Many of the fonts do work, but some do not. In particular, none of the fonts from the Zamolxis family are found. These fonts were found when running Inkscape on my laptop, but don't show up on my new system even though I know they are installed. I have checked, and they are TrueType fonts, and they are not encrypted.

I'm interested in drawing webcomics, so it's important that text and font work properly. I've tried searching for answers to these issues, but so far I haven't found any solutions.

Could you be more specific about those characters in Junicode font?

Zodiac signs (Unicode 2648 through 2653, hexadecimal), for example, show up just fine in Sans, but not in Junicode. Other special characters, such as a die face six (Unicode 2685) disappear entirely instead of displaying a blank character, as though the text object ceases to exist.
