problem opening Inkscape

Postby cecil » Fri Mar 03, 2017 2:03 am

I've been using Inkscape for years but a few days ago I began having trouble opening the program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled but just receive the following error: Inkscape has encountered an internal error and will close now. This error appears when I click on files previously created in Inkscape (showing the Inkscape logo).

I am positive that I have Inkscape installed on my machine but the strange thing is that when I right click on one of those previously created files and choose "open with"; Inkscape is not one of the options.

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit. I have the latest Windows update installed (12-18-2016).

Any suggestions??

Will Inkscape open from the desktop (not opening an existing file)?

Can you share an exisiting file? (upload here or a link to a dropbox file)
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Thanks for your reply. No, I receive the same error message when attempting to open from a file or the Inkscape icon. I also just noticed that the saved svg files no longer have the Inkscape logo, they have an Internet Explorer logo. ???

Your file looks fine, so it is more likely the install of Inkscape has a problem.

I'd uninstall Inkscape and remove the ..\users\(yourUsername)\appdata\roaming\Inkscape directory.

Then re-install to see if the issue persists.

PS
SVG is a web graphic filetype, so it's common for a browser to be shown as the default program to open them.

You can set Inkscape to open SVG files by double-clicking on them. In version 0.91, the file association was broken, and you had to....it's been a while, but I think you had to edit the registry to fix it. But it should be working in 0.92.

To associate Inkscape to SVG files, right-click on any SVG file > Open With > Choose Default Program. In that dialog, if you don't see Inkscape in the top section, be sure to check the bottom section, which might only be indicated by a small plus sign. Click on the plus sign to open the bottom half. If it's not there either, then click Browse near the bottom of the window. Navigate to where you installed Inkscape, which would be something like C:\Program Files\Inkscape.

Click on Inkscape on the left side of the window, then on the right side of the window, find "inkscape.exe" (without quotes) and click once on that, to highlight. Then click Save at the bottom, and you'll be back at the Open With dialog. There, be sure to put a check in the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". And finally, click OK. Next, Inkscape will open, and you should be seeing the Inkscape icon on all the SVG files.

After upgrading to Inkscape 0.92.1 r15371 x64 the same problem occurs on my PC. It has suddenly set GIMP as associated program for SVG files. The SVGZ files though, are still associated with Inkscape. There (apparently) is no way to fix this. None of the methods mentioned in this topic works.

I'm running Inkscape on Windows 7 x64

I'll install 0.92.1, to test if that problem has returned. I'll post back shortly, since I'll need to uninstall 0.92, and download 0.92.1, and etc.

Ok, well I found an issue with uninstalling 0.92. But for 0.92.1, when I went to associate SVG files with it, Inkscape was already in the list of offered programs. I didn't even have to use the Browse button to locate it.

I'm also using Windows 7, except mine is Pro, not Home or other, and 64-bit.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. It does seem odd that SVGZ is associated with Inkscape, and SVG is not! Other than making sure you're right-clicking on an SVG (not SVGZ) file, to start the process (that I explained above), I'm not sure.

Oh! It's possible that you previously had SVG and SVGZ associated to different versions of Inkscape. Like for example, if you "installed" a 7z version, and associated SVGZ to that version. That could explain it still being associated. Do you have any other versions of Inkscape?

Actually, I think if you've uninstalled Inkscape, and SVGZ is still associated, doesn't that mean you must still have another version somewhere. Because when I uninstalled 0.92, I specifically made sure to confirm that my association had been broken by the uninstall, and that it wasn't going to somehow carry over to the new version. And indeed, after it was uninstalled, the Inkscape icons were not showing on SVG thumbs.

Try double-clicking on an SVGZ file, to find out if Inkscape opens. Hhmm, well that might not help after all. I don't think you can tell the difference between a 7z version and an installed version (exe or msi), at least not by looking at About screen. Yeah, I just downloaded and unpacked a 7z version, and the About screens are identical. So this test would only work after you uninstall Inkscape.

You could try uninstalling, and make sure the association is broken. Then reinstall and see what happens. But it sounds like you've already uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times already.

Well, other than taking this to the developers (either via mailing list or irc) I don't have any other ideas. Sorry I can't help.

MMmm yes, maybe that's it? I didn't see a link to the relevant bug report, to find out if it's been fixed. That's a bug with 0.91, so don't know if it's fixed for 0.92.

I briefly searched in LP and didn't see anything similar, so I suspect it's been fixed (officially). But sometimes things don't get fixed as well as the devs thought? (and often I can't find bugs by searching, that I know have a report)

Will be interesting to find out. As far as I understand, this can be any font with a non-letter, non-number character (like #, %, etc.) in the font name, as well as Chinese fonts. (I assume any traditional Asian font too - Japanese, Korean, etc.)

Lets see if I can provide more info.

Firstly, I have no fonts installed that are non-Western. (no Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic, Arab, and so on)
All fonts which I have installed, have worked with previous versions of Inkscape.

installed fonts.pdf
list of all my installed fonts
(212.45 KiB) Downloaded 201 times

Also, to be clear, Inkscape does start up without any problem.

The only thing not working, as far as I can tell, is Inkscape not associating with the .SVG file extension.

I tried first uninstalling the old Inkscape version, checked for other versions being present, which they weren't, then installed the new version of Inkscape.

So that didn't work.

Since GIMP was associated with the SVG file extension, I have uninstalled GIMP, then observed that the SVG file extension was not anymore associated with any program.

Then I went through the whole uninstalling/reinstalling of Inkscape, but regretfully to no effect.

Rebooting made no difference.

Wow, I've never seen so many fonts! I don't see any odd characters in the titles. There are several Asian-sounding names, but the titles are not in the traditional glyph-like characters.

Well, I'm stumped. I'd suggest either posting to the User or Development mailing list (which requires subscribing to the list), or filing a bug report (you'll need to make a new account if you don't already have one. In any of those places, you can dialog with developers, and if they don't know the answer, this will be a new bug. And then you can help them by providing all the info you have. Feel free to link to this topic, but not to the start of the topic. Link to your first message in the topic. If you end up making a bug report, don't piggyback. Make a brand new report.

If you like, or if you don't want to register an account on the bug tracker, I or someone else could make the report for you. But you stand a much better chance of getting developers' attention and solving the problem, if you dialog directly with them yourself. Here's some info on making a bug report. Not all of it will apply to you, but just use whatever part of that info you can. https://inkscape.org/en/contribute/report-bugs/ Or again, one of us could start a report for you.

If you do make a bug report, will you please post a link in this topic, so we can follow it too? (We like to learn, so we can help future users who might have the same problem.)

(You could try IRC, but this problem sounds like it might need longer term discussion....and discussion which should be memorialized rather then momentary.)

I wouldn't change anything just yet.

I presume Inkscape is installed where the command key points: C:\Program Files\Inkscape\inkscape.exe

So, I'd try to associate the filetype using normal means. If that doesn't work, I'd defer to the developers for help.

With 0.91 and Windows 7, you did have to edit the registry, to associate SVG with Inkscape. That shouldn't be needed for 0.92.x. But we'll see what devs have to say. I saw the message posted, but there were no answers by the time I logged off yesterday. Don't have email open yet today.

Well the question seems to have stumped the devs - no answer yet.

But I had asked kind of a side question (but on the User list) because trying to think through this question gave me another question.

If you double-click on an SVGZ file (which I understand are still associated), I guess it opens Windows Explorer showing each SVG file? Or do all SVG files open at once?

I don't have any SVGZ files, and I'm not even sure how to make one to be able to test with.

Edit
Well, I was thinking an SVGZ file would have more than one SVG file in it (like a zip file). But now I'm thinking maybe it can be just a single SVG file that's compressed.

It's just so strange that SVGZ is associated properly, and not SVG.

With 0.91 and Windows 7, in my PC, Inkscape associated to SVG on it's own.

I'd presume SVGZ files use extra compression, which may be useful for sending big vector files as attachment through e-mail.
Problem might be compatibiliy, which I'm guessing at.

There is a bug report at Launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1417146

A work around was posted there, that fixes the problem.
To be safe, I recommend to export the existing Reg key before applying the fix.

Work around:
To manually work around it:
- Open "regedit.exe"
- Browse to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\inkscape.exe"
- Delete this key ("inkscape.exe")

Afterwards you should be able to associate SVG files with Inkscape normally.

The reason for the bug is that Windows seems to have problems to differentiate between
- "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\inkscape.exe" and
- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\inkscape.exe"
Therefore if you had the 32-bit version installed and update to the 64-bit version, the reported behavior occurs.

I did not have to reboot.

The key after the fix:
HKCR\Applications\inkscape.exe\shell\open\command REG_SZ "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\inkscape.exe" "%1"

I have applied the solution myself, and Inkscape is now properly associated with the SVG filetype. :)
The SVGZ filetype is also still properly associated with Inkscape, like it was before.

Oh wow! Well clearly there is still something unknown and unfixed about this. That's actually the bug report I made when I couldn't assoc in 0.91. Since I didn't have any problems with 0.92, I wrongly assumed it was fixed.

Anyway, I'm glad you're fixed and moving on to have fun with Inkscape :D
