Often new Inkscape users don't know how to provide screenshot, so I thought I'd write instructions here, where I (or anyone) will be able to refer to them, instead of writing out all the details every time. I'll also include how to upload attachments
Screenshots
You don't need any special software to make a screenshot, although I think most computers systems ship with something these days. In Windows 7, it's called Snipping Tool, which is found in Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool. It's very easy to use, and I won't go into details, because if you can't readily figure it out, you can click the blue ? button to get help. I don't know about other operating systems, but again, you don't need special software.
- Put whatever it is that you need to show us on the screen, then press the Prnt Scrn key. This makes a copy of whatever is on the screen. Be sure you don't have any personally identifying info showing.
- Open almost any graphics program and either press Ctrl + V or find a Paste button. Even MS Paint, which ships with Windows will work for this.
- Save that new image, and type either .png or .jpg on the end of the file name. Don't forget where you save it, because you'll need to find it soon.
- Upload this new image to the internet. There are 2 ways to do this, and here's the first, and best way:
4a.- There are several image hosting websites, or file sharing websites that are free to use, and countless others where you have to pay. This topic lists several free ones: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7 Choose one and follow the instructions for uploading the image. The site will give you the new internet address for where the image is now residing. It will probably be labelled "URL", or otherwise, it will start with "http://..."
- Copy that address.
- Now come back to your message here in this forum and click Post Reply (not Quick Reply). Type any text that you need. Then click the "Img" button.
This will cause a short bit of code to be pasted into the message, and the cursor will be flashing right at the exact place that you need to paste the new address for your image. Typing Ctrl + V will paste it in (or right-click > Paste). - Click Preview, to make sure that the image shows up. If it doesn't, go back and make sure you copied the right address, and that you pasted the right address. If you can't figure out what the problem is, let us know, and we can help
- Click Submit.
- Another way to upload the new image, is to attach it to your next reply. (Note that this is not the preferred method, since the forum will someday fill all the space that it has for images, and yours may someday be deleted, to make room for more. It's better if you find a permanent host for your image at an image hosting or file sharing website.)
- Click Post Reply (not Quick Reply). Type any text that you need to type.
- Look below the Save, Preview and Submit buttons for the "Upload attachement" tab and click it.
- Click Browse to find your image. Once you locate it, click on it, and then click Open.
- Next click "Add the file" button.
- Click Preview to make sure it shows up like you want.
- Click Submit.
Upload attachments
Actually I've already covered uploading attachments in 4b. But just a couple of comments. Sometimes you might be asked to provide the SVG file, so that we can look at it and figure out what the problem might be. There's only one true image host know that accepts SVG file format, and that is http://www.imgh.us/index.php. Once you upload it, you can give us the link. Or you could upload as an attachment to your next reply. Note that when you upload the SVG, the image itself will not be shown in the forum, as it is with PNGs or JPGs.
So there you have it. If I've forgotten anything, I'll edit in later. Or anyone can reply with additional comments that I might have missed. New Inkscapers can also post a reply if they have any questions.
All best
