How to make a screenshot & How to upload attachments

Postby brynn » Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:01 pm

Hi Friends,
Often new Inkscape users don't know how to provide screenshot, so I thought I'd write instructions here, where I (or anyone) will be able to refer to them, instead of writing out all the details every time. I'll also include how to upload attachments :D

Screenshots

You don't need any special software to make a screenshot, although I think most computers systems ship with something these days. In Windows 7, it's called Snipping Tool, which is found in Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool. It's very easy to use, and I won't go into details, because if you can't readily figure it out, you can click the blue ? button to get help. I don't know about other operating systems, but again, you don't need special software.

  1. Put whatever it is that you need to show us on the screen, then press the Prnt Scrn key. This makes a copy of whatever is on the screen. Be sure you don't have any personally identifying info showing.
  2. Open almost any graphics program and either press Ctrl + V or find a Paste button. Even MS Paint, which ships with Windows will work for this.
  3. Save that new image, and type either .png or .jpg on the end of the file name. Don't forget where you save it, because you'll need to find it soon.
  4. Upload this new image to the internet. There are 2 ways to do this, and here's the first, and best way:
    4a.
    • There are several image hosting websites, or file sharing websites that are free to use, and countless others where you have to pay. This topic lists several free ones: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7 Choose one and follow the instructions for uploading the image. The site will give you the new internet address for where the image is now residing. It will probably be labelled "URL", or otherwise, it will start with "http://..."
    • Copy that address.
    • Now come back to your message here in this forum and click Post Reply (not Quick Reply). Type any text that you need. Then click the "Img" button.
This will cause a short bit of code to be pasted into the message, and the cursor will be flashing right at the exact place that you need to paste the new address for your image. Typing Ctrl + V will paste it in (or right-click > Paste).
    • Click Preview, to make sure that the image shows up. If it doesn't, go back and make sure you copied the right address, and that you pasted the right address. If you can't figure out what the problem is, let us know, and we can help :D
    • Click Submit.
    4b.
    • Another way to upload the new image, is to attach it to your next reply. (Note that this is not the preferred method, since the forum will someday fill all the space that it has for images, and yours may someday be deleted, to make room for more. It's better if you find a permanent host for your image at an image hosting or file sharing website.)
    • Click Post Reply (not Quick Reply). Type any text that you need to type.
    • Look below the Save, Preview and Submit buttons for the "Upload attachement" tab and click it.
    • Click Browse to find your image. Once you locate it, click on it, and then click Open.
    • Next click "Add the file" button.
    • Click Preview to make sure it shows up like you want.
    • Click Submit.

Upload attachments

Actually I've already covered uploading attachments in 4b. But just a couple of comments. Sometimes you might be asked to provide the SVG file, so that we can look at it and figure out what the problem might be. There's only one true image host know that accepts SVG file format, and that is http://www.imgh.us/index.php. Once you upload it, you can give us the link. Or you could upload as an attachment to your next reply. Note that when you upload the SVG, the image itself will not be shown in the forum, as it is with PNGs or JPGs.

So there you have it. If I've forgotten anything, I'll edit in later. Or anyone can reply with additional comments that I might have missed. New Inkscapers can also post a reply if they have any questions.

All best :D

Oh, thank you nesDk :D

For new users, who don't know what a dropbox is, maybe you could explain? For example -- What kind of software might be needed? Or what kind of website do they need to look for? (I actually have no idea what a dropbox is, myself  )

sure. was intended for easier use if not having an imagehost login.

what a dropbox is, might best explaind via their video. 8-)
Image.
but i'll give it a try

dropbox is an online storage cloud, free accounts 5 gb for your stuff.
besides having everywhere acces to your favorite documents online.
you could have a local folder on all your machines that are synchonised for free (5gb)
also good for corlaborating with other dropbox owners, just share a folder with your selected partners, BANG

not working for dropbox, but would +1 it to everyone
here's a create account link

miss-spelling, my bad ;)
Edits my bad too

Is Dropbox the only storage cloud available, or are there others? Does it require any special software? It looks like you have to download something. I only vaguely understand the "cloud" concept.

So I guess Dropbox is about the same thing as an image host, except that it has this "cloud" capability? In other words, you still have to upload your screenshot image to the....internet, or cloud, right?

I think the "Where can I upload my images" topic has been locked. But maybe we need to somehow add this "cloud storage" to it? I'll ask microUgly about it.

there must be others, tag team anyone?

nope don't have to, just login via the site.

yep, pictures online needs to be online. nothing new in that part.
call it a server-space, picture-host or whatever. was just meant as another way to upload, for the people with a dropbox.

I think the "Where can I upload my images" topic has been locked.

haven't seen it, sorry.

Well I don't want to turn this into another "where to upload images" topic, since we already have one. So I'm looking into unlocking the aforementioned topic, and adding info about cloud storage. Then people can find their own preferred host. And this topic remains for people who need help making screenshots or file attachments :D

Thanks again, nesDk.

http://imagebin.org now also accepts and serves SVG files (example).
Note: no registration required

To download the SVG file with Firefox: right-click on the image and choose 'This Frame… > Save Frame as …'.

~suv, is imagebin another cloud storage thing? If so, I'm looking into adding it to the "Where can I upload my images?" topic. Otherwise, I really would like to keep this topic for new users and about making screenshots and/or attachments.

Edit
Ok, well it appears that images are only kept for 14 days on imagebin, so that can't be cloud storage, I don't think. And certainly not appropriate for putting images in this type of forum, because they could be removed, before the discussion is even finished! Unless I'm missing something?

Edit 2
Oh ok, ~suv, you must have been responding to my comment about only 1 image host that accepts SVG. Even though pastebin accepts SVG, I'm not sure the 14 day limit would be very attactive.

And please, no more image hosts, file sharing or cloud storage links! This topic is to help new users learn how to make screenshots and upload attachments :D

(I might end up moving these last messages to the "Where can I upload my images?" topic later.)
