Scale/rotate tool and Selection improvements etc

Postby Gabriel Zackari » Wed Apr 16, 2008 8:51 pm

Scale tool/rotate tool To scale and rotate only selected vector points, within an object not whole objects.

(Perhaps one should also be able rotate the scale tool, to be able to scale in different directions.)

A setting for:

Applying a rotation or scale on all the selected objects as if though they where one
object or on all the selected objects individually.

When set as apply transformations individually.
The rotate tool should rotate the directions of the selected vector points.

Selection additions.

In 3dsmax you have a selection setting to select only:
1.objects/points completly inside the selection area.
2. objects/points completly and not completly inside the selection area.
/xor selection.

A save selection would be very useful.

Airbrush
Artistic brush. Paints with a selected brush.
The tool should inherit the objects fill etc.

Being able to copy a style.

You can already scale (>, <, Alt+<, Alt+>) and rotate ([, ], Alt+[, Alt+]) selected nodes.

Being able to copy a style.

You can copy an object and then paste the style. Isn't that good enough?

Applying a rotation or scale on all the selected objects as if though they where one
object or on all the selected objects individually.

As a work around to having a separate rotate/scale mode, you can do this with the Transform dialog (Shift-Ctrl-M). There's a checkbox labeled "Apply to each object separately". It might be handy to have a separate mode for it, but we seem to be out of modifier keys for the Selection tool. Ctrl, Shift, and Alt all have functions already.

2. objects/points completly and not completly inside the selection area.

You can do this with the "draw over objects to select" mode of the Selection tool. Hold Alt while dragging. Any object touched by the red line will be selected, although it doesn't work while in the Node tool.

Being able to copy a style.

As sas pointed out, Copy the object whose style you want, then Paste Style (Shift-Ctrl-V) on another object.

I have a swedish keyboard and have tried all possible keyboard combinations shift, alt, Alt Gr, Ctrl, shift+Ctrl on all keys on the keyboard but can't seem to get any shortcut for rotating working.

I get the scale working which is great being able to scale nodes.

Perhaps not a rotate tool as it good to keep the number of tools down but rather when you select nodes you could get a bounding box with scale/rotate handles around the nodes that would make it possible to scale and rotate the position of the nodes.
This would also show newbies that is is possible to do, without them having to go through a keyboard shortcut list.

Thats great, Sorry, I missed that. How about making it a choice in the rightclick meny?

Another thing I often miss is the ability to:

Scale using the objects coordinate center

Or rotate the scalebox.

Anyway Inkscape Rocks! And its very close to being everything I have ever wanted from a vector application.

You can do that by holding Shift whilst dragging the handles.

Or rotate the scalebox.

Clicking the object with :tool_selector: will toggle the controls between scaling the object and rotating it.

This is an absolutely awesome idea...
It would be like each seperate object's current centre would be maintained and the rotation would be applied individually to each sub-object so that each would rotate about their own respective centers...ect....

What a great idea... dood...
In hind sight this is obviously great..... i'm bummed i didn't think of it...

as mentioned above it's already an available feature in the transform dialogue.

Oh yeah... i wrongly assumed this function did not yet exist....not because i had not yet seen this control but because i had not realized its limitations and thus misinterpreted it previously when i attempted to utilize it un-successfully.

He didn't mention that it does not work via the on-screen rotate handles....and that one has to manually enter in a number and click apply for this to actually have an effect....

I had seen this control: checked it an then noted that it had no effect whatever.....
Im not a big fan of having to key in stuff manually and hit apply ETC.... so i didn't give it a second thought...i just assumed it either did not work, did not work properly or was not what i assumed it should be going by the name of the function....

So when i saw this guy's post i assumed he was referring to a function that did not yet exist.

Real time is best....if it doesn't work somehow on-screen then it may as well not exist.....

I did note that the mouse wheel does work to effect this parameter but any change to this setting is not made until you click apply and so to me is basically untenable... and under my radar....

I agree that it is inconsistent with many other elements controls in Inkscape. It would be easy for someone to miss that, even after pressing Enter, that they still need to click the Apply button.
