Hi All,
See attached pic. I have Inkscape latest version running on a dual core Win7 64 bit pc with 4gb ram. Inkscape is now running very slowly after I created a 2nd object using the EdgeEffect 3D extension. The 2nd object is just a copy of the first. The slowness started right after I copied the 1st object. Could the objects have too many nodes? File size is only 536kb.
Any way to fix this? Thanks!
Advait

Welcome Advait!
Hhmmm, your system seems to have enough RAM to handle this, certainly enough for that size of file. That extension would not add any extra nodes. But filters are notorious for causing performance issues such as you're having. Do you have any other filters in that file?
There are some things you can do, to continue working on the file, with as few slowdowns as possible. (note to self: write tutorial). Divide the file into layers. Hide layers that you don't need at the moment. Zoom only as much as you need. The further in you zoom, the slower Inkscape can work. Use View menu > Display Mode > No Filters or Outline.

Re: Inkscape responding very slowly after EdgeEffect
Hello Brynn,
I'm also using the "Pattern on Path" extension in the same graphic. Does that not play well with Edge3D?
I followed your instructions re layers and it worked great. Then I found another solution. I complete the design with everything but the the Edge3D effect. Then I save the file with a different name (ver 2). Then I open ver 2 and apply the Edge3D effect. Then I export the bitmap and then close ver 2. This works great for me.
When I use the Edge3D effect, InkScape starts using about 50% PCU and about 788mb of ram! Wow! So obviously some kind of memory bug with Edge3D. I presume the developers are aware of this problem and will fix when they can. If this is a new problem, how should I submit a but report? If there's some other way around this problem with Edge3D, let me know.
See pic for a screenshot.
Thanks for your help! Kind Regards,
Advait
PS: I'm loving InkScape! Easy to use and powerful. I made a donation.

Re: Inkscape responding very slowly after EdgeEffect
Oh, definitely you would want to do the PAP before applying that extension. (And which that extension looks more like a filter to me. I wonder if it's in the wrong menu??)
I actually tried that 3D extension, before replying to your message. I didn't have any sort of ill effects. Of course I don't know what settings you used, but I played around with a few. So I'm not sure if it's the extension alone, or something else in your file that's causing the high CPU use. If you tried using PAP after applying the 3D effect, that could have overloaded it, I guess. We'd have to look at the file to have any kind of idea. (And it couldn't be me, because I don't know what to look for, as far as a bug.)
If you're interested enough, and you can reproduce the problem in a new file, containing only the offending elements, you'd be welcome to submit a bug report at Launchpad. Info here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=484
I'm glad you got it to work
