Create Cloned Tiles (Trace)

Postby Jellyhead365 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 4:06 am

Hi,

When using the Create Cloned Tiles feature to trace an image, Inkscape freezes completely every time.

Using this tutorial: Screencasters Blog (068 Halftones)
When following it exactly, the program freezes after pressing Create, to trace the image.

I notice that it works fine in the video, although it's running on Linux, which I guess has a lot less bugs than the Windows version, due to it being developed mainly for that platform.

Is this a problem with the Windows version of Inkscape, or does it work fine for other people, and so likely a problem with my computer?

Computer Specs:
Windows Vista 32 Bit
Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.40GHz
NVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB
3GB Memory
etc etc

Thanks for the help in advance 8-)

Additional Info:
The problem occurs on both the latest stable release (0.46) and also on the latest nightly snapshot (19754-0808281147)

Off Topic: I couldn't edit my post, I assume because I haven't registered. Perhaps I should do that for future posts.

I haven't tried myself, but I wouldn't expect this to be a problem for all Windows users. Try re-installing Inkscape and if that doesn't work I'll try to get around to test it myself.

Also, are you sure Inkscape is actually freezing and not just taking a long time to finish? Creating a lot of tiled clones is one of the easiest ways to slow things down, in my experience.

Just click reset and all will be fine.

the issue i find with this tutorial is that the results don't always work. I have had minor success doing this and other times i try it, it's like the tiled clones do what ever they want to do. i'll get some in pattern at the bottom of the screen, and others are just at random size and intervals and spacing. Anyone have any idea why the chaos?

cloning via the >create tiled clones will not correctly if the page is resized, page resizing basically makes this feature unusable. You can find the bug report at inkscape's launchpad site.

I guess a work around is to create your tiled clones in a new default file then copying/pasting it to the file you are wanting it be in..

Bug #168651 in Inkscape: “"Tiled Clones" inside transformed groups broken” and its duplicates.

Another workaround: add a new layer and create all objects you need for the tiled clones (i.e. the base tile) on the new layer (you can move them to the target layer later, once the result needs no more editing).

EDIT to para below: update - Brynn, thx for the comments and tips, you are always so helpful. I read some addl info and was able to get just the object (a flower) to finally clone successfully, with no problems. What I couldn't (and still can't do), is get anything to clone using the rectangle method that the help manual describes, so I gave up on that method. note: I have blurs in my flowers and it cloned perfectly, though it's small.

I'm using Win 7 and I can't get this feature to clone anything at all, though it does not freeze on me. I assume that when you put objects on the original tile (after raising it to the top), that it is supposed to update all the clones at that time, at least that what the op manual shows. (I'm following the main Inskcape help manual that shows the grapes on a vine). So, not sure if this is a problem with Win 7 or if I'm missing a step?

If you're not using the Trace tab, why don't you go ahead and start a new topic. Be sure and say exactly what step, or where you are in the tutorial where you first notice a problem (I don't remember is that one goes by steps 1-2-3, or what). I doubt if it's Windows 7 ;)

But a couple of quick tips meanwhile. Be sure you have set up the area big enough to hold what you plan to make (Rows, Columns or Width, Heighth). Also, on tabs that you aren't using, be sure everything is set to zero or defaults. And finally, if it's something very large or intricate, be sure to wait a while before giving up. Inkscape's performance issues are often evident with this feature, especially if you're making a full page (screen) full of clones.
