This is probably a stupid question, but when I use the circle tool to draw a circle, the result shows a line dividing the circle at the halfway mark. How do I get rid of this line? Am I doing something wrong?

look into the tool's toolbar (that's above the drawing area). There are quite a few settings that can be made. One of them allows you to close a circle.
