Re: Video: Inkscape Transparency

Postby BobSongs » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:28 am

Few things are clearly explained to the new user. Inkscape's documentation is ... "okay" ... but it's generally not amazing. That's because the development team is the only staff available for documentation. Inkscape's help system is far from perfect. As much as I enjoy using the software, I must admit: I cannot say that the help files were even remotely helpful.

Then I came across these tutorials. There are, at this point, 90 screen casts bringing out the richness of Inkscape as a serious graphic arts tool. So if you felt a bit let down by Inkscape's lack of guidance and assistance, then these tutorials should help balance that out.

Looking forward to hearing your response.

I can't speak for BobSongs, but the way I read his post, all I see is that he confirms what you already stated: The documentation of Inkscape is not really helpful to the new user.

I do not have the impression that BobSongs is commenting on your video.

As far as I read it, he's just pointing out to sources that have been more helpful to him than the Inkscape manuals and he hopes that these sources may help you further as well.

For the record: I haven't viewed your video, but that's only because Transparency is not a subject I'm interested in, at the moment. Once I have to deal with it, I might have a look at it.

Not that it matters at this point, but let me explain the issue I have with the Inkscape board in general.

When people post questions about how to do specific things like say Crop within Inkscape - they have received snippety answers, asking for more detail when indeed the question couldn't have been stated more clearly or precisely. This has been ongoing throughout many threads that I have witnessed at the forums themselves. You may not notice it, but as someone whom deals with the public on a daily basis and with multiple forums dealing with a wide-range of subjects, I did and continue to do so.

At other forums, when someone posts a message which contains details like a video or a worded tutorial that they've created to help new members in the community, most people take the time to watch or read the information presented and then give a reply detailing what they think about it. It, their answer, may be positive or negative but they address the information presented first and foremost. Then, they MAY include a link to a thread or a website that has more detailed information, but at least they take the time to reply to the original topic.

Bottom line:

Obviously I may be a bit hyper-sensitive, but the reason I deleted my posts was because the first person that replied couldn't take the time to address my central theme. Instead, he ignored it and simply used my thread to advertise other tutorials. Nice and thanks !!

In the end, give me a warning, hell delete my account if you feel that I've overstepped some written rule, but understand that I was taught if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Hence the reason why my posts were deleted.

So you took such offence at the first response that you didnt allow any of the rest of us to give a response at all?
The first time I saw this thread you'd already deleted your posts, so there wasnt any chance to watch or read it.

When people post questions about how to do specific things like say Crop within Inkscape - they have received snippety answers, asking for more detail when indeed the question couldn't have been stated more clearly or precisely.

I personally reserve the right to request more information to gauge the persons current level of understanding. Knowing what they don't know will influence how I present the answer and can save a lot of time explaining detail they might already know.
but the reason I deleted my posts was because the first person that replied couldn't take the time to address my central theme.

I remember your post seemed to focus more on complaining about documentation rather than highlighting your video. If you didn't want people to respond to your complaints, then you should not have brought them up as a part of your topic.

My issue with you removing your post is that this is meant to be an open community. If you post something here then you should be posting it for the benefit of yourself and everyone else who might be interested. Your removal of your topic shows a selfishness about your motivations. And this is reinforced by your reaction to a single response. You were obviously posting for your own benefit and nobody elses--that's not why this forum was created.

Having said that, don't feel like you can't continue to post here. But don't post if you can't tolerate a response you weren't looking for. And if you don't get the response you were after then maybe you should rethink your wording.

I never saw the original post, but the main (for me, at least) Inkscape manual is at
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.html.
This documentation is pretty good. Once in a while I'd like more detail, but
overall it is good, and the index is mostly complete.
