resize image for kindle in inkscape

Postby sipoi » Thu Jun 20, 2013 8:08 am

Hi I have made a picture book using gimp (outlines) and inkscape for colouring. I want to publish this on kindle and hopefully print.

I foolishly made my gimp images at the default 72dpi (or ppi can't remember which), luckily I made them huge so I was able to sent print size at 300dpi and the images where still big enough to use, although a couple need re worked.

I would now like to resize these for kindle. Kindle ask for 600 by 800 pixels at 300dpi. It has to be a small file too, about 130kb I think (which i achieved by saving a jepg after resizing).

My images are landscape so can easily fit the opposite of that 800 by 600. I think I am best to lock the ratios together and save the vertical one at 600?

I resized one online and was surprised that my a4 images reduced to an actual size of about a couple of inches, I guess this is what kindle want?

Can I use inkscape to resize my images? When I try to reduce the pixels the dpi changes. (using export bitmap, selection)

I think I can do it in gimp. But if I can do it in inkscape it would be much faster.

Thanks for any tips.

P.S. this is a great forum, glad it is here.

Welcome aboard!

With resizing and exporting images from inkscape you are facing troubles from anti-aliasing and most probably the resulting image would look blurred from that. Well it will get blurred from resizing in a raster program as well, but gimp can handle rasters better than inkscape when it comes to scaling.

Also, is that 800/600 size at 300 dpi correct?
That would mean an image that is 67,7/50,8 mm at the printing.
That seems to me too small for a book.

I am only talking about the kindle, at that size, not a print copy.

I really do not know much about the 800/600 300 and what it means, but yes the images took so small it seems wrong.

There is a mention of it here, it is over my head

I can't find the official word from kindle on the subject right now. will keep looking.

I think I have found most of the info I need here

http://kindlegen.s3.amazonaws.com/Amazo ... elines.pdf

The images need to be gif. None of mine are but that is easily fixed

Have a look at this topic:
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14450

For non-print images, the dpi doesn't have any meaning. Screens have different resolutions that you cannot set exactly to 300 pixels/inch.

Another thing, A4 height/width ratio is 2^0,5 which means an A4 sized image could be either 849/600 or 800/566 on screen.

Also gifs don't have a full rgb's colour range, try to produce png-s instead if you want to use colours.

That link was great, thank you.

I have gone through all my pages and changed the A4 to a 800 / 600 ratio. It said 800/600 but that changed the dpi to 64. I upped the dpi to 300 so the 800/600 also increased but the ratio should be correct.

I think I understand from reading the thread that I can now just resize my images without too much concern for the dpi.

Amazon have a thing I can down load to view what my images will look like on there various apps and products. I can't do this on my g5 mac so will hunt out someone with a more modern computer and try it.

Thanks

Your image being A4, 297/210 mm-s, it can be either 800 pixels tall, 600 pixels wide, OR have a resolution of 300 dpi.
A4 in inches is 11,693/8,268, which
at 300 dpi is 3508/2480,
at 72 dpi is 842/595,
at 64 dpi is 748/529 pixels sized.
(849/600 is at 72,608 dpi, 800/566 is at 68,417 dpi.)

Don't set the dpi, set the pixel size instead.
Or set the size in inch or mm, AND the dpi.
BUT you cannot set both the dpi and the pixel size for an image with exact inch or mm dimensions.

"Or set the size in inch or mm, AND the dpi"

This sounds like the best way to correctly size my print copies?

To produce the kindle images I needed to keep the quality high, when I saved one picture as a test at 72 dpi it looked very pixelated. I am a bit frustrated with this as it is the final hurdle and I am not there yet.

I am still not clear on what kindle want. Will keep plugging away.

That said Inkscape has been great so far. I am amazed what I have been able to do with it. If I were to start again I would not use gimp at all, ( I did not know about Inkscape when I started).

I will post a sample pic at some stage.

Thanks for all your help.

I think my problem was reading too much about this.

I have now found out kindle allows a much larger file size for fixed format pictures, 800kb, yay that is easier.

Not I can save my files at 300dpi, covert to jpeg using preview and get a file around 700kb.

I also found this diagram help full, as to screen sizes of various readers.
http://apex.infogridpacific.com/dcp/flo ... ratio.html

I guess my 800:600 ratio is 4:3, which fills an ipad screen. That suits me as my pictures are colour and better suited to colour display.

So yay, all sorted.

Thanks
