Unable to import or open dxf files to v0.91

Postby pblix » Fri Mar 06, 2015 2:17 pm

Hi all,

I'm using Draftsight as my primary CAD program. I have geometry often consisting of splines. The end goal is to generate gcode for a CNC router.

The process I'm trying to use is Draftsight -> export dxf -> Import to Inkscape -> create gcode

I had v0.48 on my computer installed sometime last year I think. I had no issue importing dxf files earlier today in v0.48. Later this evening I learned from the inkscape wiki that there is a gcode in v0.49 or higher. I proceeded to install v0.91 on my computer (running Windows 7).

In v0.91 I'm unable to import the dxfs no matter what type (ASCII or binary, regardless of AutoCAD version etc) eventhough it worked fine in v0.48. I can't even open the .svg that I saved out from v0.48. I'm stumped.

Anybody else having this issue or have come up with a work-around?

Any and all help appreciated.

OK, I figured it out. My dxf contained several empty layers that also got imported, but are obscuring the layer where the geometry is. AutoCAD and derivatives handle layers a little different as everything except lines are transparent. Not so in Inkscape. In Inkscape you need to delete, turn off, reorder etc. the other layers for the geometry to show.

Hi.

Thanks for updating - nice to know!

Any chance to see the "final result" from your CNC-router - might build a CNC-system one day.
Good Luck!
