assortment box with adjustable grid dividers

Postby MHz000 » Fri Mar 10, 2017 12:46 am

I'm very happy with the Lasercut Box plugin.
What I'm missing is an adjustable grid for the box e.g. to store electronic parts. I think on grid divider (guide trenchs?) that have slots so that horizontal and vertical dividers fit together forming compartments.

Thank you

I'm not very familiar with any of them, but I know there are relatively a boatload of extensions to make boxes. Here's I'll list all I know of, and you can check them out yourself. They don't necessarily all work.

Hi brynn
thanks a lot for your hints! For making tabbed boxes I already use a fine working plugin called Lasercut Box.
However what I was looking for are an extension to one of those box making plugins to produce dividers/guide trenches to store collectons of e.g. electronic parts.
As beeing askt for the dimensions of the box one should be free to choose the numbr of horizontal and vertical compartments. I'm quite sure that would not be a major task for the creators of the box making plugins. Is someone of them listening?

Thank you

Sadly, not very many developers (or really advanced users) participate in this kind of forum. If that extension was installed by you, not packed with Inkscape, a license file or readme file with the author's name and/or address, might have been in the package you downloaded.

I'd say your best chance at having something like that made, would be with the original author. Although if it has a free/open license, anyone who knows the code could create the extra feature(s). If it was downloaded from github or similar, I'm pretty sure there's a way to contact the author.

I know I've seen Moini (who does visit often) has occassionally fixed or upgraded.....actually, she might have upgraded that very extension. I know she worked on some box maker extension. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :D

I think this would require some testing with real materials, and I don't have access to a lasercutter / plywood (nor a need for boxes, currently ;-) )

Hi Moini,
does responding mean my qustion/proposal is of broader intrest - not just for my self? Anyway thank you!
I personally don't own a lasercutter but have access to one in a fablab. I also have some sheets of plywood *) at hand and: as I'm keenly need some tailor-made assortment boxes I'm happy to invest material and time.
The basic idea is to have in addition to the box parameters some extra definitions or a seperate plugin for the grid checkboxes for box and for divider grid. This for producing just the divider grid for an already existing box.
Beside the inner dimension of the box all you need is the number of horizontal and vertical compartements and of course the thikness of the material - it may bee differ from that of the box. The shape of the dividers may look like a comb with slots half the high of the box top down for horizontal dividers and bottom up for vertical dividers.
Sounds easy but you have to know how to "programm" inkscape - I don't but be willing to assist and test.
Thank you!
*) for testing cardboard my bee sufficent

- I think it could be of broader interest (although, I was kind of politely declining...)

- That changes it a bit, as it means I wouldn't have to do it alone. I'm currently still catching up with things that had to be delayed for a couple of days, when I've been at a conference.

- Makes sense. Can you point me to the code repository of the extension you have been using and would like to see extended?

Beside the inner dimension of the box all you need is the number of horizontal and vertical compartements and of course the thikness of the material - it may bee differ from that of the box.

- The possible difference in material thickness being the reason for using the inner dimensions, not the outer, I guess.

The shape of the dividers may look like a comb with slots half the high of the box top down for horizontal dividers and bottom up for vertical dividers.

- Wait - horizontal and vertical?... You mean, parallel to side A and to side B of the box, I guess :)

Seems you've got a pretty good image in your head already of what would be needed.
Oh, wait. I just remembered that I might already have seen something like this somewhere.

Web search..., so this is what comes up:

Would that work for you?

I suggested that one earlier, but he said he was happy with the one he was using. I seem to remember you working on that Tabbed Boxmaker, at least part of it, and thought it might already have what he wanted. But I wasn't sure.

BINGO!!!
Hi brynn, hi Moini,
thats exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for guiding me and thanks a lot for your patience.

As I don't know how to contact paulh-rnd the autor of that famous work I'll post here two minor enhancements:

1. there might be conditions where one just need the box without the dividers or the other way around as one just need the dividers to fit an existing box. Two checkboxes will do the trick.
2. in either case it might be avantageous to declare a different material thickness for the dividers - this affects the "fitting" slots of the dividers

Both proposals aren't absuloutly necessary as you can do it always in seperate jobs however I belive they are worth the effort for the sake simplicity

thank all of you for the nice experience

To contact the author, login to github, create an issue at https://github.com/paulh-rnd/TabbedBoxMaker/issues - I intensely suspect he will not see it here.

I think most of us have found that following the forum is a great way to get on your feet with Inkscape. At first, you'll only be able to answer a couple of topics, but before too long, you'll find all kinds of new topics you can answer!
