Text not appearing in latex at the same place as in inkscape

Postby baran065 » Tue Nov 03, 2015 7:19 am

Hi, I am a novice Inkscape user. I am using Inkscape to create figures for a document and I am saving Inkscape images as .ps with ps+Latex option to import the figures in my Latex document. The issue I am seeing is that whatever text I place in Inkscape near some part of the figure is not appearing even remotely close to that part of the figure, I have to adjust the text by a fair bit for the text to appear in Latex at the desired place in the figure, but it tends to add too much undesirable white space in the figure. I would like to know how to fix this issue. The following link is to the folder in my copy.com (a file syncing and sharing service, similar to dropbox) folder where I have put the Inkscape figure and Latex document. Please help.

https://copy.com/dcocWO0zUvWLBKfE

In the link to the folder above, there is an inkscape file called 'DAB_simple.svg'. You can open the file in Inkscape to see that the text is way down compared to the figure, but in the compiled latex pdf file 'HW5_sol.pdf', it is observed that the text appears the way I mean it to appear.

I am really sorry if a question about text alignment issue akin to this has already been asked and answered before in this forum.

It seems that the problem is with v0.91 of Inkscape. I switched back to v0.48.5 and the issue is no longer there. But if you folks suspect something else, please reply.

It may be the something about the extension changed, between versions. I'm not familiar with Latex, so I'm not the best to investigate.

But I'm glad you at least can use 0.48.5 and avoid the problem.

brynn, are you taking about the Latex extension in Inkscape found under the Extensions menu? The one that allows you to type Latex commands in the figure and immediately converts it to corresponding Latex text while still in Inkscape? If yes, I was actually not referring to that in the first post. To clarify, I am talking about typing LateX commands in the figure while in Inkscape, then saving it with the ps+Latex option. This creates a ps_tex file along with the .ps file. The .ps file contains only the figure and the ps_tex file contains the text along with the positions of the text and the figure. Then when you input the ps_tex file in a Latex document, it compiles the LateX commands in the ps_tex file to give a figure with the desired text output.

I have observed the same issue. The text needs to be adjusted significantly to appear where it is placed.

I am not able to find a download to v. 0.48.5. Can someone point me to it.

thanks -G

About halfway down the page here: https://inkscape.org/en/download/ under the heading "Previous Version" :D

Actually, I seem to have gotten it to work. Instead of saving as an .eps (with the LaTeX options checked in the save dialog box), I saved it as a PDF.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry for misunderstanding. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about that.

Since I don't understand any of this, I can't make any useful comments. Except that if this issue persists and we keep getting messages about it, hopefully one of our "bug experts" can look into it.

Well, .pdf works with pdflatex, rather than regular Latex which I use. So, this is not a solution for me. I don't really know what are the major improvements in 0.91 over 0.48.5 though, so I am not sure I even need 0.91. There is the x64 version and there are a few performance improvements, but those really aren't a dealbreaker for me as of now. So I don't care about 0.91 for now.

Hi All,

I just installed the version 0.92.1 r15371 and this problem is still there. I use a lot this option to export the figures to pdf_latex and have it working would be great.
Please, if it is working, let me know what I have to do to fix it.

Best regards,
Anderson

By now, there are some new (and different) extensions for LaTex. I don't know if there are any LaTex extensions installed in Inkscape, but there are a couple of external ones which you could install and try out. I don't know which ones of these might work or with which version of INkscape they work with.

WriteTex - https://github.com/wanglongqi/WriteTeX (LaTex / Tex editor for Inkscape)
XeTexText - https://github.com/virrapax/XeTexText (fork of TexText)
TexText - https://inkscape.org/en/~jcwinkler/%E2%98%85textext or https://github.com/textext/textext (LaTex editor)
LaTexTex - https://inkscape.org/en/~seebk/%E2%98%8 ... n-inkscape or https://github.com/seebk/LaTeXText (searches text in a document and replaces with LaTex)

Also since the original message was posted, Inkscape's native resolution has changed, native units have changed, and new Scale options added, all of which could potentially result in objects not being in the same place, in a different program.

In this case, it's probably best to start a new topic. I'll leave it for active moderators to decide whether to split your message out into a new topic or not.

Also if you could share the SVG file, which extension you're using (which isn't working properly), your operating system and Inkscape version, it would help us to sort it out.

Additionally, the current Inkscape version is 0.92.3.
