How can I install Inkscape on a Ubuntu machine

Postby StevenD » Wed Aug 05, 2009 8:53 am

I have an Ubuntu machine that I would like to get Inkscape installed onto. The machine doesn't have an internet connection and I have tried for a week now to get a wireless adapter working with no success. :( Is there a way to download Inkscape and copy it to a disc then install it on the Ubuntu machine? Or should I just skip Ubuntu and stay with my Windows Vista?

There is a way to do it of course but it's so much easier through official package repositories, this way it's safer because with Inkscape also all the libraries that Inkscape may depend upon will be installed with it, in case you already don't have them.

I'd recommend fixing the internet connection, it's usefull for so many other things than just installing new software :)

Have you found some tutorials about setting up the wireless on ubuntu? I know it can be tricky on some laptops, and especially if there are many networks active in your area sometimes they interfere. Ubuntu forums and chat room are great places to get help, don't forget to search first!

And no you shouldn't stay with Vista  I'm shameless

If you must try the "dry" download check out Inkscape download page and look for Autopackage area.

Yeah I was afraid of that. Like I said I have worked for a week now on getting a connection set up. I have looked up articles and gone to the Ubuntu forums. Although some very good folks have helped or at least tried to help there is still no internet and plenty of frustration. How long did it take me to get Inkscape on my Windows machine? An hour or less maybe.

Don't get me wrong I'm not giving up on Ubuntu. Yet. so far I like what I have seen. But to have software installation so dependent on one item... Well... I'm dead in the water and going no where fast. Vista has been good to me by the way.

I have tried to find something to download. I will try and look up this Autopackage thing you mention. I just want something I can work with to ease the frustration.

Thanks for the reply. :)
