Hi! I'm a new user of Inkscape, This software is very cool, but I've a big problem, sometimes I need to open .ai files (adobe illustrator) but the program give me an error:


The file I'm sure is a file of adobe illustrator, I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.

I am not sure which version this error pertains to, but inkscape .46 can open .ai files but not all of them. Usually if it cannot open .ai files it will just say unable to open the file.

the ill2svg.pl script that was with 0.45 had support for only the older versions of illustrator, before they switched to a pdf based fileformat (with the same extension i believe, just to be helpful.)
The development version can read these newer ones with the new pdf import code, and from my testing works fairly well.

if you cant install svn, you could also try the uniconvertor project from the sk1 team at http://sk1project.org/
seems to do a pretty good job of converting a bunch of proprietary formats and will output svg.

yep I've Inkscape 0.45 from Ubuntu repository
It's difficult to install Inkscape from svn? (my english is not so good, somebody can explain to me simply?)
