I came back to Inkscape after several years and re-strated with Inkscape .91 on OS X 10.11.

I am trying to do a simple logo and wanted spiff-up some text using bevels. Many older Filters are GONE, such as ABC. Filters and Bevels seem to affect both the text and the area around it now. Is this a BUG, or am I doing something wrong?

Is there a way to get back some of the old filters?

I think I've still got them, but they were moved and are now sorted differently, as far as I understand.
New ones have been added, too, plus the ability to edit filters.

I compared a video on 0.48 filters and bevels to my 0.91 screen and looked throughout the list and couldn't find many. The Filter Editor, where you can tweak some of these filters don't seem to work at all on my Mac. A bigger problem is that the bevels when applied to the text also affect the area between and around the text.

I just installed 0.48.5 and it behaves better on a new document, but has issues with the one created with 0.91. Great

As Moini mentioned, the filters were all re-arranged in 0.91. I don't specifically know of any that were just dropped. But I also have not gone through and tried to find them all either. Since we've had several messages about that, over the last few months, maybe I'll try to do that in the next few days?

Since I'm not a Mac user, I can't help with the Filter Editor. But maybe suv will be able to help you with that.

If you can show us specific files with specific filter issues, we'll be glad to try and solve the specific problems. But you've made some rather open-ended comments about filters and 0.91 in general, that make it hard for us to get started in any one place, to help you. Maybe I'll have a chance to locate where all the filters were re-organized. But for the issue with text vs area around text, we'll need specific files and filters to investigate.

In 0.91, I still see Bevels sub-menu and ABCs too, just like in 0.48.x. I wonder if you don't have a good installation of 0.91? There are some issues with installing Inkscape on a Mac, that are new in 0.91.

Rats! And I'm having trouble searching, so I can't find the topics for you. Hopefully someone familiar with Macs will be along before too long, to help you.

Oh wait....ok, I think you're right about ABCs. I still have it in my menu because I've installed a custom filter which causes that sub-menu to be displayed. However, Bevels still seems to be there, and afaict, the same as before....well no, there are 2 or 3 new ones in 0.91. But all the old ones stil seem to be there.

But I'll try and figure out where the old ABCs filters went.

Filters from the old ABCs submenu can be found as indicated below. Filter name on the left, and the new submenu where it can be found (in 0.91) on the right:

Black Outline -- not found, but perhaps not needed, I'm not sure what it used to do, but probably can be done with regular strokes
Clean Edges -- Blurs
Diffuse Light -- Bevels
Feather -- Blurs
Matte Jelly -- Bevels
Noise Fill -- Overlays
Noise Transparency -- not found, but Noise Fill has been improved, so maybe it includes transparency now??
Roughen -- Distort
Simple Blur -- not found, but probably the blur found in Fill and Stroke dialog does the same thing
Specular Light -- Bevels

The missing ones (from the Wiki page linked above):

Morphology -> Outline (replaces and improves Black outline and Color outline)
Overlays -> Noise fill (replaces and improves Noise fill and Noise transparency)
