Keyboard Shortcuts

Postby Espermaschine » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:31 pm

Im in the process of making a keyboard shortcuts ref-sheet for myself.

I noticed a few shortcuts dont work (im on Win7):

Path Effects is 'Shift + Ctrl + 6' for me, not 7.
Rotating a handle with brackets doesnt work at all.

And while experimenting, Ctrl + Shift + 9 does something very weird: inserting 3 nodes and splitting the selected (see svg-file).

For the Path Effects shortcut, I've just created a bug report, thanks, @Espermaschine!
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1552257
(Ctrl+Shift+7 does Division, it's equivalent to Ctrl+/ on a German keyboard)

Mmh. That works for me, at least parts of it.
Only these three (from that part of the keyboard shortcut reference) don't work on my system (LM17.3):

Left Alt +] rotate left handle by 1 pixel
Right Alt +[, Right Alt +] rotate right handle by 1 pixel

What kind of keyboard layout do you use?
(I've got generic intel 105 keys, standard German qwertz, with accents needing to be typed first, then the letter they should be put on, before they appear)

Not sure what information you need...
I have a Fujitsu Siemens keyboard, with Qwertz, yes.
Not sure about the accents. I only had one year french and the only word i remember is cucumbre. Guess thats written without an accent, lol.

Left Alt +] rotate left handle by 1 pixel
Right Alt +[, Right Alt +] rotate right handle by 1 pixel

Doesnt work at all.

Ctrl+Shift+9 = Ctrl + ) = "outset path (away from center)"

Yes, that does an outset, but also inserts 4 extra nodes, so that you get kind of rounded corners after several outsets

At least we can do this: äÄöÖüÜß ;)

Omg, i feel so special right now

@Espermaschine: If you would like to, you can make your own keyboard shortcut map, adapted for a German keyboard. Make notes of the differences to document them, and upload to inkscape.org. We could point German users who struggle with missing shortcuts there then, or it could even be included.

@Lazur: You win by 11 chars ;) With your keyboard layout, it's probably even more difficult... Or do you switch layout when using Inkscape?

No, I don't switch layout. Nor use some of those mentioned shotcuts as I cannot get them working.

Im not following. My shortcut list is in english.

Just printed my ref sheet out. Its now on the right side of my monitor and a pretty long list (so the font is a bit too small).
On the left side is my Gimp shortcut sheet that is a lot shorter with better readability.
The gimp ref also has the coordinate system i use for tiled clones, while my Inkscape ref has divisibles of 360° for radial clones.

So i'll have to see if the ref sheet works in its current form and possibly refine it.
Also i only use the shortcuts i cant memorize, so its not complete.

@Espermaschine: even if the list is in English, and you're using the English interface, your keyboard layout is still the German one.
I was suggesting you create a keyboard map that remedies the problems for German users (if you like).

This can be done using the keyboard shortcut editor in the Preferences -> Interface section, which allows you to map your keyboard keys to your liking.
(but I guess you won't want to do that, right?)

Still, if you'd like to share what you have at inkscape.org, that would be nice. In the Gallery, we have a category for keyboard shortcut maps. I think an image like that would either fit there or into 'Tutorials', maybe. What do you think?

I was under the impression you cant customise shortcuts in Inkscape. Seems i was wrong :o

Im not sure how to do this properly. There must be some underlying logic, right ?
Shouldnt all the shortcuts be the same in every language ?
I know that one thing i find awfully annoying is that turning on or off snapping via shortcuts breaks your hand and is therefore unusable.
And that function is something i use most often.

At the same time i dont know to what key i could assign it, so that it all makes sense.

Aw, you edited your post. I was just about to answer... (but only by saying that I'd be happy to answer non-publicly).

About the keyboard maps:
Customizing is new in 0.91: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... stellungen

I don't think it needs to be massively logical. If possible, that would be a bonus, though. More important is that it's possible to use the shortcuts, and to do so without making a knot in your fingers ;)

Shortcuts, unfortunately, can't be the same in all languages (or they could be, if you are referring to just the position of the keys on a standard keyboard - but then the shortcuts might be very difficult to remember.) n for node tool, s for selection - that's easy.

You could use our ä, ö, ü and ß - they are still free ;)

I think it's mainly the different brackets and the slash that cause the difficulties: ()[]{}>/ , as they are easily accessible on a US keyboard (AFAIK), but all require Shift or AltGr on a German keyboard, which conflicts with keyboard combinations that use Shift or (right) Alt in Inkscape.

Yes, i edited the personal stuff out.
I can understand if you dont want to talk open about your private life on the internet.
And i dont do PM's, so lets keep it neutral.

I'll have to think a bit about the custom shortcuts.
Personally i feel there is no need for every tool or function having a shortcut.
Most of Inkscape's menu is easily reachable.

So i would probably just assign shortcuts to my most used features. But this will be personal and not universal.

I think the tools i use most are : Select, Node, Bezier, Text, Gradient and Dropper.
And Snapping is essential.
Im also missing a shortcut for Tiled Clones, as i use it a lot.
Boolean Operations i apply a lot with the keyboard.
But thats about it.
