Here I am again.
A rough trial on bamboo with gradients.
Grouped them as Combine and Union destroy the gradient.
Want to bend them but cannot make it work.
I'm sure that you have the solution
Bend group with gradients
Re: Bend group with gradients
Hhmmm.... I'm not sure.
You might need to do all the LPEs first, and apply the gradients in the end. Or build the bamboo by units, and tilt them individually, to accomplish bending.
But isn't bamboo pretty darn straight stalks though? There can't be much bending, with bamboo, so maybe building the stalks by units would work better.
I'm sure Lazur will have some very complex and technical way to do this
Btw, this reminds me of the About screen contest. Did you see those 2 entries using bamboo in the background? Those SVG files might be available....you'd have to track it down. http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/journa ... -485998934 Oh yeah, just click on the image, and it opens the artist's DA account, where it has a link to get the SVG!

Re: Bend group with gradients
Thank you, Brynn - it might be better just to draw them individually
Can't wait for Lazur's explanation

Re: Bend group with gradients
A bit mixed up on those lpe-s.
You made a group of four paths, and applied bend and pattern along path lpe on them -haven1t thought of it would be possible.
Patten along path extesion works with paths but not the lpe, as per se.
So the gradient you want to be bent is a linear one, in a random direction to the axis.
If the path bends at an even radius, a parallel gradient would turn to a conical one.
A perpendicular would turn to a radial gradient.
At any angle in between it would need to turn each of the colour steps to a logarithmic spiral shape.
Knowing the core path would hardly bend at an even radius, there would be other large distortions needed.
Svg only supports linear and radial gradients.
If duplicating/cloning the pattern and transforming manually is a no-go, and you want a really bent look, you need some other solution.
For example draw a shape more detailed than the output pixel grid, representing the gradient with flat colours, and bend that instead.
-by meaning bend, draw the core path and add a pattern along path lpe to it, then set the pattern.

Re: Bend group with gradients
Thank you, Lazur - I recognize what I saw in the file that you just attached.
I am amazed that I actually understand your explanation and will try your way

Re: Bend group with gradients
I think that it's easier just to draw every individual bamboo stick with the bending that I wish.
I was just curious to know if there was a function that would work with grouped objects with gradients.
I tend to ask silly questions

Re: Bend group with gradients
Oh, I don't think it's silly at all. The problem you presented is a common one -- wanting to bend a complex object, such as a group, including gradients. Inkscape is just not there yet.

Re: Bend group with gradients
If svg had native support for gradient meshes or diffusion curves, inkscape would provide a more streamlined hack.
Still I have doubts if illustrator would be capable for that.
Not silly question, but a great challenge for developers.
A large benefit when starting out with something new is that you are not strict to those schemes made up the game and have a complete fresh point of view.

Now I am VERY fond of Inkscape but Illustrator can do what I was asking for in this particular case:
Re: Bend group with gradients
Don't know if Illustrator can save to .svg but it certainly doesn't have the Spiro!
Re: Bend group with gradients
Regarding my search on "illustrator twist gradient", which produced no such result, I can't think that twist effect would apply on the gradient too.
Or would it get rasterized?
The only similar I found was a tutorial on gradient meshes -in a shape that could be bent much easier with a simple gradient. tutorial here
Sort of.
Because that on the "S" shape results in a gradient perpendicular to the core, which can be tricked closely with markers in inkscape.

Re: Bend group with gradients
Lazur, I actually mentioned your 'pencil-model' here http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/inde ... opic=184.0
And Illustrator's Twist tool was used here : http://ndesign-studio.com/tutorials/chinese-bamboo

Re: Bend group with gradients
Ha! So that already represented a gradient mesh. Makes so much more sense now!
