I have written an extension inspired by `textext`, which is not depended on TK or PyGtk. I have used it for more than one year, it works at least for me.
If someone is interested in improving it or giving it a try, please do it. Following is the github link to the repository:

The extension is still in development stage, it may be not very stable. Currently, I put WriteTeX directly under extension menu.

By default I use `xelatex` instead of `pdflatex`. If you would like to use `pdflatex`, please replace `xelatex` in the `inx` and `py`. There are both binary files for Windows (pdf2svg.7z) and MAC OSX (pstoedit.zip) compiled by myself. Since they are unofficial releases, please use them at you own risk.
