eps exports as blank page

Postby mkindig » Tue Aug 28, 2012 5:48 am

Hi everyone,

Inkscape newbie here, so I apologize in advance if this is a pretty simple question. I have created a number of figures in Inkscape that I have successfully exported to EPS format. However, when I export one of my SVG images, the resulting EPS is simply a blank white page (confirmed by opening it in both Firefox and Acrobat).

The image itself was created entirely in Inkscape, and just consists of a series of curves and text. Based on previous answers to similar problems that I have seen on this forum, I have tried both Path->Object to Path and Text->Convert to Text on my objects and text, respectively. However, despite this, the resulting EPS is still a blank page. However, if I open the SVG itself in Firefox, the output is exactly as it appears in Inkscape, so I think the SVG file itself is well-formed (looking over the xml source for the SVG corroborates this belief).

Any suggestions you can provide would be very helpful. Strangely, I have created about a dozen other images in Inkscape and converted to EPS without problem, but this one image is driving me crazy!

FYI, I am using Inkscape 0.48.2 r9819 on Windows 7.

Thanks again,
Matt

Welcome Matt!

I don't have the necessary programs installed to be able to open EPS files. But when you said you opened one in Firefox, I had to try. But still no luck. I'm rather confused about all the different file types that Inkscape can either import, export, or Save As. But it sounds like you've at least eliminated the text as a source of the problem. All I can really suggest is to compare this file that doesn't display, with others that do, and look for objects which might use features that are different from the ones that do display properly.

If you could show us the SVG file, then people who know which Inkscape features can or can't be converted to EPS will be able to identify the problem. :D

Hi Brynn,

I ended up converting to PDF in Inkscape, and then using another program (XPDF, available at http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf) to convert to EPS. This gave my an EPS that appears to identical to my original SVG. It seems from my experience and from searching around the Web, that Inkscape's EPS export is rather buggy; however, converting to PDF seems to be pretty stable. Thus, in the future, I will try exporting to PDF first when I need EPS images.

Thanks for your help.
Matt

Thanks Matt for sharing your solution, it was pretty helpful.

I did it on linux using these commands:

Code: Select all

pdf2ps in.pdf
ps2eps in.ps

BTW, transparencies was the source of my problem. Exporting to EPS worked fine after erasing the object that had transparencies.

cheers,
Felipe.

Hi

If you installed Ghostscript to see the esp files and you see the esp files as a blank file
Try to check if the esp file is in a folder that is sync by Google Drive.

I had this problem and just moved the file to another folder and it opened OK

I am using Inkscape 0.91
