Here's a couple I can't live without

• Colorpad - It's a very light weight program that runs in a small window and allows you to easily select colours from anywhere on your screen. I use it all the time to get Hex codes from different sources and paste the code into the Inkscape colour palette.
• Screenshot Captor or WinSnap - Programs for grabbing screenshots. Handy for creating tutorials. Screenshot Captor has the advantage of being able to screenshot a scrolling window, but WinSnap handles windows with transparency better.

does anyuone you know of any good screen video capture programs? i have tried camstudio, but cant get it to function properly under vista (havent tried too hard yet....)

Since you are talking about picking colors...

Agave — you can generate 6 different types of color schemes (Complements, Split Complements, Triads, Tetrads, Analogous, and Monochromatic) and export resulted color scheme as GIMP's .gpl file and use it in Inkscape. Just store the file in ~/.create/swatches/ and off you go

Argh, pity I'm a Windows user. I love colour pickers. It really helps with web design.

well, i don't have vista but on xp i use camtasia studio, snagit, and vnc2swf. all three work wonderfully.

on my linux box i use several as well. recordmydesktop, xvidcap, and vnc2swf.

Whooo! Thanks for the programs guys! Especially the color pickers! My problem is that I have a real old laptop that no longer displays colors quite so correctly, so it gives me all sorts of headaches when I view results on a "proper" screen. XP (skin tones become an ugly brown, contrast goes over the roof, etc). So being able to color pick more easily is a big help.

i dont really know. never tried that before...
but they have hex value - sorry not really much help

It can export as .ASE files for use with Adobe products. Unless you can convert the format I don't think Kuler will be as useful for GIMP and Inkscape users.

One small note: WINK is freeware , not FOSS. It is not even freely redistributable.
But the program is nice, I used some time ago (before Istanbul was usable) on Linux.

Saves as flash files which is not perfect or the OSS people either...

Okay, I wasn't going to give up this little gem.. but this community has been so helpful and friendly. This is a color scheme tool that I often turn to when deciding on colors for web design. Although he's busy and I haven't been in contact with him in a while, Chris is a great guy and an awesome artist. Check out the rest of his site when you have a moment...

Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned IrfanView as quick image editor, image converter, and "resampler." It can handle SVG, but not export to SVG.

That's an great replacement for ColorPad. It includes some really nice features. And did you notice in the demo animation on that page it shows a part of the Inkscape icon at the end

the create website (at freedesktop.org) is down, so you can't install the package there.

.create is a Linux thing, so here you can manually create it in Linux: go to your home folder and make a new directory, named .create (starting with a dot). inside that directory create another directory, named palettes. save the *.gpl files created with Agave there.

You can do the same saving the *.gpl files in /home/yourname/.inkscape/palettes/
