Path Difference not creating negative space

Hello!
I'm attempting to use Difference to create negative space within the outline of my image. You can see it worked on the right side and towards the middle. However, when I select a red shape and the black outline, Difference is working (see pic with new nobs where red shape used to be), but I'm not getting the negative space I want. Everything is a path and nothing is grouped, I've checked multiple times. Any help would be appreciated.

are you sure the paths are closed? Have you tried reversing direction on one of the paths? Post your file for instant correct analysis instead of more questions in reply to your question

Does adjusting the fill rule in the Fill+Stroke dialog help?

I attached the file.

I fixed my original problem by adding another layer, but I'm still having an issue creating new negative space/holes. I would like the layer "highlift holes" to be taken away from "outline." The same issue keeps happening, the action is working, but no negative space is created. Thanks for everyones help!

Delete the duplicate of the black silhouette.
