WIP a llittle advice needed

Postby superbum » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:04 am

this is a cartoon character I'm working on, I'd like to keep it simple, one level of lowlight and maybe one level of highlight in the hair. I was thinking of adding shadow to the nose but I can't make it look good, also the shadow by the ear needs to be fixed but I don't know what to do there, and I haven't been able to put a good highlight in the hair either. Any suggestions?

I'm not an artist myself and this looks really good so far, so take all my comments with that in mind.
-It looks like the mouth is not on the same plane as teh rest of the face. The left corner should be higher, I think.
-The key to picking and placing highlights and lowlights will be choosing your light source. Define that early in your drawing and you'll make it easier to identify where the highlights and shadows should fall.

That's all I got so far. Looks good, keep up the good work.

For the ear, I would colour it the opposite as you have done now. So the part that is not shadowed I would make shadowed, and the part that is shadowed I would unshadow.

I don't think it's necessary to shadow the nose, but if you wanted to, I would just add shadow at the base of the nose, not it's entire length.

thanks I changed the mouth as suggested and I tried the ear shadow as suggested, and decided I liked it best with the whole thing in shadow and no highlight in the ear.

here's the next character, not done yet, I was wondering what you thought of the shape of the shadow and if you thought that the eyebrows should be colored in?
