It's a known feature request, and part of the necessary code already exists - it is just not hooked up to the user interface yet. But adding support for extended raster image export formats (even the basic ones which are currently supported by the gdk-pixbuf module) also requires a refactoring of Inkscape's 'Export vs 'Save' functions (IMHO):
