AS the title suggests, all my svg files are not associated with inkscape, but rather firefox. If I double click on a file firefox will the images in a firefox browser window. Inkscape does not launch. I have tried to force the association of scg files with inkscape by OPEN WITH and via the folder options. ( this is windows xp proSP2 by the by).
the problem started with version .45, but now I am using the pre-release of .46, with a clean install, and it still persists. A bit more information. Orginally the files were associated with inkscape ad showed the inkscape icons, but then I moved the inkscape folder by mistake, and since then the problem is as described.
I have googled and googled and searched this forum but can't find an answer for this problem. Please help! Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
You can set it through the Open with... dialog where you choose Inkscape from the list but make sure you tick "Always use the selected program..."
If you don't see Inkscape on the list click the Browse button and navigate to your Inkscape folder and choose Inkscape.exe
Another way is to open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types, find the SVG file type and click Change button. Then select Inkscape from the list, if it's not there you'll have to find it using Browse button (like in first example).

Thanks for that, but as I mentioned (maybe not clearly enough though) I've already tried those methods. Thanks though. But now you clearly see the source of my frustration,. What you describe SHOULD work...every time. But it does not. I do exactly what you say and still, the association always returns to FIREFOX, even when I browse to the inkskape.exe file and select it. All the SVG file icons are FIREFOX icons. What's up with that!?!?
So thanks for your response, but I think we have to dig a bit deeper here. I really can't figure out how to fix this. I've reinstalled. Nothing seems to help.

When you say that you moved it by mistake are you meaning that you moved the inkscape folder in the program files?
It sounds to me that you have accumulated registry keys that no longer are applying correctly. I am not quite sure what type of maintenance you do on your computer, but you could begin with visiting Microsoft's OneCare Cleanup Center and running this to remove obsolete registry keys. The cleanup scanner is the same as performing disk cleanup but with the addition of cleaning registry keys that are obsolete. When running it will provide a restore point for you. Before running the cleanup scanner uninstall inkscape, then clean then reinstall and all should go well.
Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
Ok problem solved..for now.
Here's what I did.
1. In windows, open my documents folder ( or any folder will work really).
2. Go to the menu: TOOLS>FOLDER OPTION>FILE TYPES TAB
3. Scroll down to SVG (or just type in SVG for a quicker jump)
Now here's where it got a bit tricky and took some iterations. Not really hard but just have to do it the right way or it won't work.
4. Highlight the SVG line and DELETE it.
5. Reboot. (not sure if this helps, just worked)
6. Repeat step one, and then select NEW.
7. Type SVG and then select the ADVANCED button.
8. Next tot the Associated File Type scroll down until you can find Scalable Vector Graphics File.
9. In my case the file type was then instantly associated with INKSCAPE.
What didn't work for me was just deleting the SVG file type then creating it again. I needed to go to the advanced tab and associate it with Scalable Vector Graphics Files.
OH, and if the delete option is NOT showing (greyed out), There should be a button that gives you the option of RESTORING the file type. Click that, then the delete option should become available.
Hope no one has to go through this, but if you do, this is a quick fix, well, once you know how yo do it!

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
Thankyou bluesea;
I just had the exact same problem except in my case SVG was stuck to IE6 and neither 'Open With' nor Tools > Folder Options > File Types would allow changing it to Inkscape. A quick scroogle search landed me here. I even needed that last bit as the 'Delete' button was grayed out. Inkscape was as in your case shown as the open action upon selecting Scalable Vector Graphics File.
The SVG file association is helpful because if I am going to at any point load an existing file I have to open Inkscape at the same time via file association or drag and drop on Inkscape.exe etc. otherwise, when I open a file from the File menu, a new instance opens and in that new instance my Wacom Tablet no longer works as the device is in use with the first instance.
I find no way to Close an open file, so I can open another one in the current instance) without also closing Inkscape. The File menu has a Close AND a Quit item at the bottom but both program and doc are closed by both so one of those would seem to be redundant.

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
is your login an administrator or another type of account (e.g. power user, user, guest)....as changing file associations in windows means adjusting the registry, either by your actions or by the install program. In either case there's possibility it doesn't all quite work if your login account type is not administrator OR if the program was indeed installed by administrator but didn't choose the "for all users on computer" setting during install.
you can also edit the registry directly to change file associations (using regedit) when you know what you're doing. but probably better to log in as (the) administrator account, remove inkscape and any associated folder in local settings folders (for each user account), and after reboot reinstall as administrator, choosing "for all users on computer" option.

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
Inkscape version: 0.48.4
In my case, Win7 would not accept Inkscape as an application to open svg files with. I tried the OpenWith context menu option. I tried the file associations control panel. Nothing worked.
Then I discovered that the path to inkscape.exe was wrong in this registry item:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Applications/inkscape.exe/shell/open/command
I believe this happened because I had first installed the 64bit Windows installer in C:\Program Files. Then de-installed it and installed the 32bit installer but in a different folder (Program Files(x86)). Apparently, when deinstalling the 64bit version, the registry items were not removed (!) and when installing the 32bit version, they were not updated (!).
You are asking why the h*** I am switching back to the 32bit version? For some reason, the 64bit version on http://www.partha.com has a a dark background under the tool bars which makes the icons somewhat hard to read. The 32bit version on inkscape.org has a lighter background.
Cheers

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
A Google search for this issue brought me to this post. However, I was unable to get any of the suggested solutions to work.
I did find a solution though, so I hope this helps anyone else experiencing the same issue. I did the following:
1. Uninstalled Inkscape.
2. Browsed to C:\Program Files and created "Inkscape" folder.
3. During the install process, instead of using the default folder (C:\Program Files [x86]), chose Browse and selected the Inkscape folder created in the previous step.
4. Finished install.
Immediately after the install finished, I right-clicked an .svg file on my desktop, and went to the Open With option. Inkscape was miraculously already listed in the drop-down, but I went ahead and selected the Choose Default Program option and followed the normal procedure to set Inkscape as the default.
UPDATE: I just noticed that the previous reply basically says he did the same thing. >.< I guess I just hadn't noticed that I had downloaded the 32bit version (rather than 64), which was likely causing my issue in the first place.

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
I use a portable version of Inkscape.
1. In any folder (folder window). Go to the menu: TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTION -> FILE TYPES TAB.
2. Scroll down to SVG (type SVG) or if you don't have SVG create it. (Press NEW type SVG and then press ADVANCED. Associated File Type: Scalable Vector Graphics File)
3. In Registered file types: while highlighting the SVG line, press ADVANCED.
4. In Actions: highlighting open press Edit.
5. In Application "user" to perform actions: type in the location of the executable in "" or use Browse button.
6. Press OK.
7. Repeat for any program.

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
I don't have a File Types tab in Folder Options. I don't think there has been that kind of access since XP.

Re: SVG files won't associate with Inkscape
Right click the file - chose Properties.
Where is says "open with" click "Change" and chose Inkscape. Now the same file type will be associated with the same program when opening them.
