I'm switching to Inkscape because of the lack of compatibility between IA versions.

I always have a different one than the printing shop and it's a pain...

So everything from now on Inkscape from scratch, I will bring my inkscape portable to the printer so he can plug and play.

Are there any tutorials or guidelines for using Inkscape for professional printing machines, like typesetting etc..?

Or should I just practice at home in black and white on my own printer before taking it to the shop?

whilst the eps and pdf support in inkscape are generally pretty good; not exactly professional printing support though. your mileage may vary depending on exactly what you're after. with regards to typesetting, inkscape has basic text kerning and positioning but, no balanced ragged lines or CMYK profile etc. You can do a simple brochure or flyer in inkscape but, I'd think twice to produce a full spread using inkscape.

Yeah, Inkscape's Text tool is nothing like a word processor or typsetting or desktop publishing programs. You might try the open source desktop publishing program called Scribus. I think it works with SVG fairly well, but I don't know about typesetting.
