Caligraphy Tool and Zoom Issue

Postby w.roc » Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:39 am

:tool_zoom: :tool_calligraphic: It seems I have a problem when I am using the calligraphy tool and zoom. I want my strokes to be the same size at any zoom, but anytime I zoom in to an area and proceed to make marks with my calligraphy tool they are much smaller than the others I made when I was zoomed out even though I haven't changed settings. All my settings on the calligraphy tool remain the same but the size of my stroke changes based on how far in or out I'm zoomed. Help?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

A line drawn with the C tool should be the same size as another line drawn with the C tool, at any zoom, assuming you haven't changed anything except the zoom. But let me ask you a couple of questions.

Are you using inkscape with a graphics tablet, by any chance? If you have pressure sensitivity, that could account for different widths. Or, even if you're using it with a mouse and no tablet, the width could be different, depending in the angle of the nib, and the direction you've drawn the line. To make it the same width no matter which direction, find the Angle setting on the control bar, and set to zero :D

If neither of those helps....I'm not sure....maybe a sample file would help? Or maybe someone else will have an idea?

By default calligraphy tool's line width is defined by the screen zooming, but you can set it to be an absolute value at its preferency panel.
Shift+Ctrl+P, or by double clicking on the tool's icon.

Well would you look at that?!!! I had no idea! I apologize for giving the wrong answer.

Why in the world has the C tool been made like that??? What possible benefit???

My guess would be that it's for making it use the same "dynamics" at every zoom level. If you use absolute values and zoom in, your pen will get too wide compared to the path you draw, resulting in imperfections.
